It’s well known that bananas 🍌 come in different colors, but did you know that a diversity of colors can also be reflected in their genome 🔬 ? In our latest study  (https://lnkd.in/eQHnHHaK), we present a catalog of the genetic diversity of bananas, where contribution of wild ancestor in chromosomes is represented by a different color. This research was conducted on a large portion of the International Musa Germplasm Transit Centre (ITC) managed by the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, along with material recently collected from Asia and Oceania. A big thank you to our collaborators at CIRAD, at the origin of the chromosome painting method, US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Puerto Rico for their crucial work in their field collection and for providing many of the photos, as well as NARI from Papua New Guinea, and the Ministries of Agriculture from the Cook Islands and Samoa for for their support and their contribution to the global conservation of banana genetic resources. Alongside a group of international, multi-disciplinary scientists, #WWU Professor Rebecca Bunn, is challenging leading ideas about the carbon-for-nutrient exchange between plants and beneficial mycorrhizal fungi. Mycorrhizal fungi grow around the roots of most land plants, forming intimate structures that allow resources to pass between—nutrients from fungi to plants, and sugars or lipids from plants to fungi. Each year, this process transfers an estimated 3.6 gigatons of carbon to mycorrhizal fungi, the mass equivalent of ice covering New York City’s Central Park 1.2 km deep. A portion of the carbon transferred to fungi may be held long-term and could help mitigate planet-warming fossil fuel emissions. A development period is necessary before embarking on any planting-based restoration project 🌱 This provides a means of reducing project risks, whereby decisions about sites and methods can be made based on good science, local data, and knowledge of the literature. Just as it is necessary to pick the right biological conditions for seagrass restoration, so too is it essential to ensure the right social governance structure for projects to ensure local community buy-in 🤝 Developing a stakeholder engagement plan and delivering it creates a means of de-risking the outcomes of a project through an instilled ownership and resulting stewardship of the restoration sites. Planning with flexible project management and a good project risk assessment is critical, as many seagrass restorations will result in unexpected outcomes and shocks. Birds overgrazing, poor seed development and therefore availability, or adverse weather are examples of common shocks that result in setbacks. Such issues may lead to changes in project workplans, timelines, costs, and ultimately delays with the need for funders to understand that these sorts of issues are commonplace in projects. Excited to release the story of the scientific work Kew scientists and Peruvian botanists are doing with the help of some lively paramotorists from Brazil. Nobody had ever collected plants on the desert islands in Lomas - it was like plant hunting on the moon. Importantly, the work led to the official protection of this area in April, as a direct result of the data collected over time. Result. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
