Building a radical natural food & farming enterprise that is better for us and our planet.

About us

“In wildness is the preservation of the world.” -H.D. Thoreau IMAGINE THAT THERE ARE WAYS OF BEING HUMAN THAT MAKE THE NATURAL WORLD HEALTHIER, MORE RESILIENT, MORE NATURAL THAN IT WOULD BE WITHOUT US. IMAGINE THAT THERE ARE WAYS OF GROWING, MAKING AND EATING FOOD WHICH MAKE US NOT ONLY A PART OF NATURE BUT A BENEFICIAL SPECIES. THIS WAY OF BEING A PART OF NATURE IS SOMETIMES CALLED REGENERATIVE. OURS IS A RADICAL, NATURAL, INDIGENOUS FORM OF REGENERATION. TO US, THIS IS A NEW FOUNDATION FOR SOCIETY, AND THAT’S WHY WE ARE CALLED NEW FOUNDATION FARMS.

How might contemplating our cooling coffee help us to feel more connected to the universe? The second law of thermodynamics tells us that the universe moving through time to ever more disorder, on the surface this creates a paradox as life and evolution appear to move toward ever greater complexity. Understanding this unfolding can help us to feel more connected to not just the physical processes of gas and nutrient exchange that sustain us but to being integral to the very passage of time itself as the mechanism of the universe unwinds. To read more about this and contemplate how life appears to be a paradoxical phenomenon to entropy see the full article on our website now and perhaps you will feel like your own life is more important and connected to the universe than you had imagined. https://lnkd.in/e2BFN3QM

Does it make any sense to define life as an entity? https://lnkd.in/dzz3Tzci As a part of our take over of 3LM, Land and Livestock Management for Life we've just posted a blog post that questions how we define life. The argument being that no life can exist independently so does it logically make sense to define life as an entity or as a system and how might this thought paradigm affect how we try to restore and enhance the ecosystems that we live within that nourish us.

Should life be defined as a system?

This week we're taking over the channels for our friends 3LM, Land and Livestock Management for Life In our first communication we ask how can we 'feel holism'? We felt this was a great starting point since 3LM offer a wide variety of online and in person training courses in Holistic Management as well as a direct consultancy. https://lnkd.in/ecAWa2p3 But back to our question what can we as humans do to gain a greater sense of holism that carries through to our world view in a way that catalyse change for the better? Pose the question, "Where do I end?" and explore it from multiple dimensions. You may soon realise that defining such a boundary is both elusive and perhaps impossible, revealing the profound interconnection between your being and everything that exists. This perspective can be zoomed in to observe the living microbiome on our skin or the ecosystem we harbour in our digestive tract. Conversely, it can be zoomed out to see how we connect to the ecosystem with which we exchange nutrients, or further out still to recognise that the atoms in our body were forged in the centre of stars. If this idea intrigues you, look at the Holistic Management courses offered by 3LM.

Why does sugar taste sweet and what does ‘sweet’ even mean? Why do we taste at all? These questions are discussed in this article where we dip into the 5 tastes that make up every sensation of food that we eat and we ask the questions why and how? Everything in biology has a reason and this reason has manifest in our bodies, hard wired into exquisitely complex biochemical pathways so we can make better choices as we consume the nutrients that sustain us but the food industry exploits these neural reward pathways leading to ill health through over consumption. We look at how an understanding of these pathways can potentially lead us to step above the power of ultra processed foods and reframe them as occasional entertainment rather than anything nourishing. Journalist | Editor & Writer | Interviewer | Founder and host of ProGRESS, the green careers podcast

He shelved his ambition to be a chef, went to university and for 25 years ate no meat. Then Glen Burrows became an omnivore. There's the headline, so here's the career backstory. Glen's a hugely successful and sought-after international professional photographer and videographer. Turning vegetarian 25 years ago meant he was the awkward one at meals, but he found his tribe. Then just as the world caught up and we were told to cut down our meat consumption Glen took a calculated decision to put it back on his plate and co-founded The Ethical Butcher. Now he's head of knowledge exchange for New Foundation Farms, a radical natural food and farming enterprise based in Devon. The foundation wants to widen access to affordable food without compromising quality or depleting the environment. Intrigued about Glen's unusual career story? Want to know why, how and what? Where do you end? That's where, not when and the question is more complex than it might first appear. The boundary of the human body is not a rigid line but a living, breathing interface with the world. We are part of an ecosystem, and it is part of us; neither can truly be separated from the other. This holistic view encourages a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of all life and fosters a sense of responsibility and stewardship for the natural world that sustains us. Is anger the deepest form of compassion? When understood and channelled correctly, anger can be transformative. It can lead to personal growth, healing, and stronger relationships, all grounded in compassion. Working through anger in therapy or self-reflection can uncover underlying issues, leading to healing and the development of healthier emotional patterns. David Whyte’s perspective that “anger is the deepest form of compassion” invites us to reconsider how we view and handle this powerful emotion. By recognising the compassionate roots of anger, we can transform it from a potentially destructive force into one that drives positive change, protects what we value, and strengthens our connections with ourselves and others. Anger can drive change and this is what the world needs. To read more see the article on our website https://lnkd.in/e3M92m9P

What is work? You might think it's what you do for a living but the definition within physics is slightly different. Did you know that the amount energy contained in one barrel of oil is the equivalent to the work that can be done by a fit human working a 40 hour week.......for 12.5 years! Latest article on our website looks at the mind blowing maths of fossil fuel usage and suggests a mindset that we need to adopt as we say 'thank you and goodbye' to using this stored energy. Quantum consciousness and better food. The question "If a tree falls and no one sees it, does it make a sound?" highlights the interconnectedness between observation and reality. This aligns with the Copenhagen Interpretation's notion that observation affects existence, suggesting our consciousness significantly shapes our understanding of nature. Recognising this interdependence can inspire more harmonious and integrated approaches to living within and nurturing our food systems, all it requires from the observer is perhaps a little thought... There's a debate that spans psychology, physics and philosophy that relates to the relationship between consciousness and matter, which one arose from the other. However, in this article we suggest that simply contemplating this interconnectedness will lead to a more holistic view of reality that will benefit the impact of your decisions when it comes to food and our place within the systems that support us. Have you ever considered what we humans are actually made from and where it comes from? Essentially of course every atom that is you came from something you have eaten but when we trace those elements back it gets really interesting. Approximately 95% of our sustenance originates from elemental gases in the air, undergoing a transformation through the intricate mechanisms of life. As these basic elements ascend through the trophic levels of ecosystems, they evolve into increasingly complex forms. Yet, despite this complexity, everything we consume—whether we eat, drink, or absorb—is fundamentally air and will eventually revert to this elemental state, highlighting a profound, syntropic journey from simplicity to complexity and back again.
