There are many apps and services that can get you the help you need without having to leave your home including a dedicated NHS app from which you can view your GP health record, order repeat prescriptions, book appointments or access health advice – something over 400,000 people in the county are already doing. About us
NHS Dorset is the commissioning organisation for the whole county of Dorset. The group is a membership organisation, formed of all 86 local GP practices in the county. Our mission is to support the people of Dorset to lead healthier lives. What do we do? Our principal work is to plan, develop and buy health services on behalf of the local people. We are responsible for buying: Planned hospital care Urgent and emergency care, including the 111 service Community health services Mental health and learning disability services Rehabilitation care Maternity, children's and family services NHS continuing healthcare The key providers across the county include: Dorset HealthCare Dorset County Hospital Poole General Hospital Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospital Salisbury Hospital Southampton University Hospital Yeovil Hospital South West Ambulance Service There are many other service providers from the charitable, voluntary and private sectors that allow patients a wider choice of service location and type. We are committed to improving the local health services to reflect their local population needs and do this by working through a number of Clinical Working Groups (CWGs), to consider where improvements can be made. Each of these work programmes is led by a GP, supported by other doctors, specialists and commissioning managers.

We did it! 🏆 We are beyond proud to announce that NHS Dorset and our partners University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, Dorset HealthCare University NHS Foundation Trust, Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Somerleigh Court have won the Nursing Times Award for Infection Prevention and Control with our Dorset Hydration Project – every drop, every cup, and every bite counts! 💧 This innovative project focuses on improving hydration among older people, reducing urinary tract infections, falls, and antibiotic use while supporting national antimicrobial resistance goals. The judges praised our fun and engaging approach, multidisciplinary teamwork, and clear focus on patient outcomes. Last week, we had the privilege of visiting Wild and Free Therapy, a Community Interest Company (CIC) that’s making a real difference in the mental health and wellbeing of parents and carers of children with special needs. Thanks to the Community Mental Health and Wellbeing grant from NHS Dorset, they are organizing special sessions by the beautiful Boscombe Beach, combining the therapeutic effects of the sea with the power of community. This initiative is creating a space where carers can recharge, share experiences, and find support in one another.
