Why is Peter from our anlaytical services team counting bunt spores? Bunts are spores of the Tillietia tritici fungi - also known as stinking smut due to their fishy smell! It can be found in wheat and causes emerging ears of infected seeds to be replaced by black bunt balls. It's important to get seed tested as symptoms won't be visible until ear emergence. Bunt can spread by wind, easily ruining a whole field. It's also found in poorly stored seed and can survive in soil of a previously infected crop. You can get your seed tested at #NIAB.
