Adding intelligence to ageing and longevity.

About us

The National Innovation Centre for Ageing is a global organisation supported by an initial investment from UK Government and Newcastle University to help co-innovate - together with citizens and private and public organisations - services, technologies and products and deliver them to the market through innovative, ethical, and sustainable business models. Our mission is to “add intelligence to ageing and longevity”, by connecting and interpreting the personal, social, environmental and economic dimensions that underpin different stages of life. The purpose to create a world in which we all live better, for longer, caring about planet and people - present and future. NICA's sister organisation, VOICE®, is a unique organisation, comprising a large network of citizens across the UK and internationally. VOICE members contribute immense insights, experience, ideas and wisdom to identify unmet needs, wants and aspirations to drive innovation for healthy ageing and longevity and improve research.

The Bernicia Living team’s first workshop with the Internet of Caring Things® (IoCT™) programme was a huge success!   We are so excited to be partnering with them and it was amazing to have access to UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing’s innovation experts who deeply understand the needs and values of our tenants.   We can’t wait for these insights to start shaping the future of older adults' housing.   Thanks to Jennine Jonczyk, Belle Chawisa Deesomboon, Sam Monery, Poppy Hudson and Apoorva Jain – this amazing workshop was just the beginning of our exciting journey together!   #BerniciaLiving #LongevityHouse #BetterHousing #SupportingOlderAdults #InnovativePartnership

I was invited to talk about #inequalities related to #ageism and #healthylifeexpectancy in cities a d how #cityoflongevity can tackle it at the amazing event #ForumInequalities, hosted by Triennale Milano and organized by Stefano Boeri Architetti, whom I thank for the wonderful opportunity. It was the pre-launch event of Triennale's 2025 exhibition on this same subject. I also had the chance to listen to and share with one of the most extraordinary line-up of global thought leaders on the topic of inequalities related to cities and urban development that I have ever come across. I was particularly impressed by #RichardSennett, Member of UN Committee of Urban Initiatives with his call for a real "Right to the City". Francesco Billari, Dean of Bocconi University, who with his usual lucid rhetoric in his beautiful talk "contrasts vs. destiny" reminded us of the importance of choices to be made today in light of what we already know will happen tomorrow. The Scottish anthropologist #TimIngold is absolutely convinced that the technological proliferation to which we are witnesses and protagonists will collapse, in toto, because of its energy impact on the planet, and this is where his Manifesto for a new humanism" or even, I would say, for a "post-new-humanism" takes shape. Naturally of great impact was the beautiful talk "Forms follow bacteria" by #BeatrizColomina, Director of Graduate Studies in the School of Architecture, Princeton University and #MarkWigley, Professor of Architecture, Dean Emeritus, Columbia University, which opened a luminous window on the relationship between wo/man and context, between possessing and being possessed (by bacteria), between the visible and invisible in our race of life on the planet. Paola Antonelli Senior Curator at the Department of Architecture and Design and Director of R & D, MoMA, who with the talk "Creatures: Experiments in Communication and Empathy" touched on the multiple dimensions of how art, design and architecture twist on each other in solving and generating inequalities. A very rich day of which it is impossible to report all the nuances. Yet two quotations are obligatory for the emotion they aroused, at least in me. The testimonies of #KimiaZabihyan and Nazanin Aghlani from the #GrenfellNextofKin, on the Total System Failure that happened at Grenfell Tower, and #AmosGitai's short film, like a sort of direct take through a time-gate from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Reality in its most ruthless forms, real or fictionalised, reminds us how inequalities are, perhaps, the real uber-pandemic of our century. #ageingintelligence UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing #cityoflongevity

Over the past couple of months, I've been working with the team at the UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing as part of the Internet of Caring Things® (IoCT™) programme. Our mission at DoDays is to enrich the lives of families and communities, and through their IoCT programme, NICA are striving to improve well-being and prosperity across the region, that's some synergy right there! We worked with a diverse Voice® advisory panel to look at the DoDays proposition through a different lens and better understand the role we can play in the North East and beyond. Having lost wor "Gramps" at the grand old age of 100 in the summer, never have I felt more passionately about family and community life and the impact it has on us all. A massive thank you to Sam Monery, Belle Chawisa Deesomboon, 🦋Claire Robinson🦋 and the whole team at NICA, who have been hugely supportive and provided such valuable insight.

  • Our #polls are back!🙌 In the search for ways to live longer and healthier, medications like Ozempic are capturing attention. Known primarily for treating diabetes and its role in weight loss, could it also hold potential benefits for #longevity? And what does this mean for innovation in food and health? As #Ozempic influences our approach to ageing and diet, there are opportunities for the food industry to focus on healthier options and for healthcare to develop new longevity strategies. Could such medications, combined with lifestyle changes, lead to breakthroughs in healthy ageing? NICA and the #VoiceGlobal community are working with businesses to ensure everyone can live longer and healthier lives! We’d love to hear your views and thoughts, please take a moment to participate in our short poll!👇 https://bit.ly/47rRrpd Read the full article about Ozempic and longevity in our online magazine, #ThisCuriousLife: https://bit.ly/4gpN4Pu #AgeingIntelligence

  • Meet Ms. Liuo! 👋 At 83, Ms. Liuo is a living testament to the power of #lifelonglearning. Raised in challenging circumstances in Taiwan, she had to leave school at 15 to support her family. After a long career in accounting at the Taiwan Sugar Company, her thirst for knowledge remained unquenched. It wasn’t until her retirement at 60 that Ms. Liuo truly embarked on her #educational journey. Invited to join the University for Seniors in Kaohsiung, she seized the opportunity to explore subjects she had always been passionate about. Over nearly two decades, Ms. Liuo earned undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, and even a PhD, receiving the prestigious President’s Award along the way. Ms. Liuo has also recently joined our global chapter, #VoiceTaiwan. Read her full interview in #ThisCuriousLife: https://bit.ly/4dGA2er 👈 #AgeingIntelligence

  • Meet Mike! 👋 What began as a simple pastime in a friend’s garden during his school days has evolved into a cherished #lifelonghobby. Now 69, Mike finds that #croquet offers much more than physical activity; it provides him with a renewed sense of purpose and a supportive community. In his 50s, after a hip replacement made it difficult to continue with other sports, a colleague invited him to a croquet Open Day, sparking a new chapter in his life. Since then, croquet has provided gentle exercise, stress relief, and the joy of connecting with others. Listening to the desires and challenges of real people is key to innovation and forms the foundation of our #AgeingIntelligence strategy. If your business focuses on lifelong experience, get in touch with us to speak with Mike and thousands of our #VoiceGlobal members to gain valuable insights!
