🔬 A new Cystic Fibrosis Innovation Hub in Manchester is being launched to develop pioneering tests and treatments for lung infections. The research team at The University of Manchester, in collaboration with Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, will focus on understanding why people with cystic fibrosis (CF) develop lung exacerbations (flare-ups) and how to personalise treatments for them. The Manchester CF Innovation Hub Director is Professor Alex Horsley, key researcher within the Manchester BRC Respiratory Medicine theme. Researchers from theme will act as Principal Investigators on the studies. The multi-million-pound Innovation Hub is part of a new £15 million Translational Innovation Hub Network, funded by medical research charity LifeArc and leading charity Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Today, Dr Celia Hulme delivered a pivotal presentation to the British Sign Language (BSL) Advisory Board Health and Social Care sub-group. This government-led board, established under the landmark BSL Act 2022, plays a crucial role in shaping policies affecting the Deaf community in the UK. Dr Hulme, researcher in the Manchester BRC Hearing Health theme, delivered a presentation titled "BSL Users and Audiology: Adult Hearing Aid Services”. This shed light on the challenges and needs of BSL users in accessing audiology services and the cultural competency of service design and delivery. The BSL Advisory Board, tasked with advising the government on BSL use in communications and policy implementation, will use Dr Hulme's insights to address key issues facing Deaf people in audiology services. This collaboration between academia and policymakers represents a significant step towards more inclusive and effective healthcare services. Experts from Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and The University of Manchester have helped to develop an updated guideline for evidence-based, expert management of systemic sclerosis in people of all ages. Salford Royal is a referral centre for patients with systemic sclerosis and Rheumatologists Dr Michael Hughes and Dr Muditha Samaranayaka and Dermatologist Dr Nuala O'Donoghue as well as BRC Cluster Lead Prof Maya Buch were part of the UK-wide team who contributed to the new British Society for Rheumatology guideline. Since the previous guideline in 2016, progress in managing systemic sclerosis has included the areas of interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, hypertension and digital ulcer management. There are better opportunities to diagnose the disease early, and this update also expands the recommendations to cover systemic sclerosis at all ages, including children and young people. https://lnkd.in/emYpsiPi

🗞️ Low dose morphine has the potential to treat chronic cough in people with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), research led by Manchester BRC and NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre has shown. IPF is a condition where the lungs become scarred and breathing becomes increasingly difficult. Several treatments can help reduce the rate at which IPF gets worse, but they do not improve symptoms or quality of life. The PACIFY COUGH study is the first to show the benefit of using low dose morphine to treat IPF-related cough, a distressing symptom with significant physical, social, and psychological effects. The study took place at the NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at Wythenshawe Hospital, NIHR Guy’s and St Thomas’ CRF and NIHR Liverpool CRF. In the study, cough frequency was measured using the VitaloJAK cough monitor, a custom built wearable digital recording device with a lapel microphone and contact sensor attached to the breastbone, developed by Vitalograph in collaboration with Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. The full-day event, held in partnership with NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), was filled with expert presentations, personal insights and plenty of networking and contact building for the future. 🙌 The morning session completed with a bang!💥 It was wonderful to hear, at the Greater Manchester Inflammation Research Showcase event hosted by the NIHR Clinical Research Network Greater Manchester , about the innovation, initiatives and collaboration that is securely underpinning Manchester’s research efforts. We heard from Professor Ben Parker who gave a great update on the early phase Rheumatology research being delivered at The NIHR Manchester Clinical Research Facility. Professor Richard Warren followed, outlining their ground breaking work, in partnership with industry, looking at the development of novel therapies for treating inflammatory skin diseases and showing the positive impact this is having for patients both physically and mentally. And lastly Professor Anne Barton gave an informative talk outlining how The NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is driving translational research.
