The Future of Surfaces: NIMA’s visit to the Surface Design Show London 2025 We attended The Surface Design Show 2025 that took place in London over the past three days showcasing what the future of surfaces looks like! This is the best place to see the latest innovations in surface materials for architects and designers. It's also a vibrant hub for discovering cutting-edge solutions, from recycled and upcycled materials to groundbreaking bio-based innovations. It was great to see the latest developments from leaders in the Biodesign field, listen to insightful panels on the role of materials in promoting sustainability and ethical sourcing, and see friends at the stands. Seeing such a vibrant community of innovators driving positive change in the materials sector was incredibly inspiring. We were especially excited to see KAVA Surfaces , Blast Studio SAGES , Ecolattice, Procédés Chenel International, and NOVAVITA DESIGN, as well as the beautiful work of our dear friend Bio Crafted and the talented Mathilde Wittock. It's amazing to see so many people pushing the boundaries of sustainable alternatives through revolutionary materials, proof that innovation and sustainability go hand in hand! See you next year Surface Design Show 👋🏼 #SurfaceDesignShow #Biodesign #SustainableMaterials #CircularEconomy

Biodesign is not just about integrating biology into design, it’s about recognizing that no discipline exists in isolation. The natural world thrives on interconnected systems, and so does innovation. Neri Oxman's Krebs Cycle of Creativity perfectly illustrates how each discipline fuels the next, shaping the future of materials, technology, and design: "The relationship between science, engineering, design, and art is like a clock, where you constantly shift and move from one discipline to another, and the input of one practice becomes the outcome of another. Science turns information into knowledge, the engineer turns knowledge into utility, design turns utility into cultural behavior and context, and art turns cultural behavior and questions our perception of the world. And when art meets science, biodesign is created." Biodesign emerges at this intersection, a movement shaped by the collaboration of multiple disciplines, each playing a crucial role in rethinking materials, sustainability, and the way we design for the future. We see the Krebs Cycle of Creativity as our greenprint, a guiding framework for designing with nature, circularity, and regeneration at its core. How do you see these disciplines shaping the future of biodesign?

Biodesign is the bridge between human innovation and the natural world, using the building blocks of biology to co-create solutions that support life on Earth. It fosters regenerative practices that align with the principles of life itself, paving the way for a more sustainable and circular future. It is the blueprint that guides us.🧫 🍃

The fate of our planet hangs in the balance. 🌎 The Global Plastics Treaty negotiations in Busan aimed to curb the plastic crisis, but, no agreement was reached. Reducing plastic production is essential, but some nations resisted this crucial step. We must continue to seek a strong treaty to protect our environment and future generations. #EndPlasticPollution #GlobalPlasticsTreaty #Busan #UN
