💡Clean Ammonia on Demand 💚

About us

We're Nium 👋 🌏💚🔬 (pronounced Nee-Yum) We're nanoscientists, engineers and entrepreneurs: a team and technology built to eliminate emissions at scale. Nium was born at Carbon13, Cambridge in Spring 2022. Our nanocatalytic solutions were developed by our CTO over 2 years at the UK synchrotron facility, Diamond Light Source. Why Ammonia? Ammonia is a building block to our lives, precursor to half of global food, a key to a cleaner future of food and fuel. But Ammonia production is dirty - the most polluting chemical industrial process on the planet - 96% of it depends on the century-old Haber-Bosch process, and relies on burning fossil fuels. Our patent pending, 'Clean Ammonia on Demand' system provides a scalable, efficient, effective, alternative. We reduce the pressure, temperature and overall energy in ammonia catalysis, removing the need for fossil fuels. Clean Ammonia on Demand brings science backed benefits across multiple hard-to-abate sectors. * We can eliminate fertiliser emissions, 1.4%, 450 megatonnes of CO2 annually * We can eliminate a further 3% of maritime CO2 emissions by using clean ammonia to power ships, instead of fossil fuels. *All while giving a versatile vector to green hydrogen energy as we race to decarbonise energy, steel, aviation and other critical industrial processes. Why 'On Demand?' Today the majority of the ammonia we use is made in China and Russia at massive industrial plants burning coal, gas and oil. We decouple ammonia production from these fossil plants. Using renewable power and our novel nanocatalyst, we synthesise ammonia at a fraction of the price and pollution of traditional Haber-Bosch. Our Clean Ammonia Army of supporters and investors includes Agfunder, DCVC, BMW Respond, Octopus Ventures, The Sustainable Markets Initiative, The Greenhouse, and Carbon13 - The Venture Builder for the Climate Emergency. #Ammonia #GreenAmmonia #GreenAmmoniaOnDemand #Nium #WeareNium

So…the King made a film for us... 👑 Ok, not exactly... But we caught your attention 👀 The Nium team recently got together at Diamond Light Source Harwell Science and Innovation Campus with RE:TV to create a film to build understanding about Green Ammonia and Nium's mission to provide Green Ammonia on Demand globally. Who are RE:TV ? ‘RE:TV was launched by His Majesty The King in 2020, when he was Prince of Wales. As our editor-in-chief, he gave us clear guidance on the principles and priorities for us to follow, and his long-standing commitment to the environment continues to inspire us today. As he said in 2020, "We've got to come together as a world on this."’ Communicating these initiatives is so important The environmental impacts of ammonia production are widely known within the industries we are targeting, but there isn't as much awareness on the solutions - Many buyers don't know that Green Ammonia on Demand could be an option for them in the very near future. By reducing the emissions associated with ammonia production, we can create a pathway to green hydrogen for use in sectors like transport and heavy industry. Incase you haven't seen our recent posts, we wanted to share the film with you again: https://lnkd.in/eWCEvre4 We're committed to our mission to reducing carbon emissions by providing green ammonia on demand. Cleaning up energy production is one thing, but what happens next? As an energy vector, ammonia has the potential to significantly contribute to decarbonising the energy system, by: • Transporting hydrogen from distant generating sites (i.e. offshore wind) to end users. • Allowing stable export of low-carbon energy from countries with non-intermittent, low-cost sources. • Storing large amounts of energy generated by renewable sources when supply exceeds demand, balancing the energy system in places with intermittent energy resources. • Delivering green energy to remote locations and regions, including direct power generation. • In the transport section, after decomposition into hydrogen. A clean ammonia transition could look like ... According to the IEA* we could see total reductions of 13085 mtCO2eq by year 2030 and reductions of 36532 mtCO2eq by 2050. Previously, we've spoken a lot about the potentials of clean ammonia being used as agricultural fertilizer, but it's potentials extend far beyond that, particularly with huge potential impact within energy transport. Ammonia is a Hydrogen derivative with several advantages over it. It’s much easier to handle, requiring much milder conditions of about 10 bar at -25C. Its structure makes it more efficient at transporting hydrogen than using hydrogen itself. It also burns as a carbonless fuel. While hydrogen transportation is a ‘lossy’ process with many technical unknowns, ammonia has a mature existing infrastructure as a critical ingredient of global fertiliser and less technical risk. All these factors make it a more practical, versatile vector that could realise the hydrogen economy. In the IEA Net Zero scenario, hydrogen is responsible for 6.5% of cumulative emissions reductions from 2021-2050, avoiding up to 60 Gt CO2. A quarter of global hydrogen demand in 2050 (614 Mt) could be internationally traded, requiring new supply chains and transport routes for energy carriers. Most hydrogen projects that have identified a hydrogen carrier molecule have chosen ammonia, and up to 10% of total global hydrogen produced could be transported over large distances in the form of ammonia by 2050. This represents up to 20% of total ammonia demand by 2050: 110-127 Mt. Direct power generation from uncracked ammonia could also be cost-effective. By 2050, it could account for 35–105 Mt of ammonia, eliminating up to 478MtCO2eq. Some ways ammonia could have an essential role as an energy carrier are: • Transporting hydrogen from distant generating sites (i.e. offshore wind) to end users. • Allowing stable export of low-carbon energy from countries with non-intermittent, low-cost sources. • Storing large amounts of energy generated by renewable sources when supply exceeds demand, balancing the energy system in places with intermittent energy resources. • In the transport section, after decomposition into hydrogen Ammonia could play a huge role in decarbonising energy systems. But carbon dioxide is not the only problem in our current ecological crisis. In addressing climate change, we must take care not to shift the burden to other planetary systems. But what does this mean for the future of energy? As the world accelerates its shift to sustainable energy, major players in the industry, particularly energy companies, will have massive potentials for global impact. Energy companies are often villainised for their environmental impact, but our modern society leans on them - and ultimately, they hold the key to driving a sustainable future. So, can energy companies save the planet? The path forward is clear: transitioning to cleaner, more sustainable solutions is essential. But solutions need to have existing infrastructures in place, and present an economically viable solution. This is where clean ammonia comes into play With new innovations allowing for reduced carbon production of Ammonia, Ammonia is stepping up as a huge super-leverage-point in the global climate transition; with applications such as fertilizer, shipping and as an energy vector. By acquiring clean ammonia facilities, companies like Woodside are not only diversifying their energy portfolios but also positioning themselves as leaders in the clean energy transition. This strategic move allows them to utilise existing pipelines, storage facilities, and other infrastructure, minimising the need for new, capital-intensive investments. Nium can act in different sectors of the economy: fertiliser, fuel, energy, chemicals. But they don’t exist in isolation from each other. Zero-emissions solutions like the mighty minion can influence multiple sectors at once. A recent report identifies Ammonia as one of three “super-leverage points” that “could trigger a cascade of tipping points for zero-carbon solutions in sectors covering 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions”. A clean ammonia tipping point in fertiliser could reduce green hydrogen prices, in turn helping unlock tipping points on clean ammonia use for shipping and steel production.
