💬 Last week’s UK budget introduced a substantial £40bn tax increase to support vital infrastructure, transport, and essential public services. Among the most impactful changes? A sharp rise in Capital Gains Tax (CGT) rates, with higher-rate taxpayers now facing 24%—a major shift for investors. 🔍 Higher CGT Rates – Increasing the Value of EIS & SEIS With CGT now set at 18% for basic-rate and 24% for higher-rate taxpayers, the tax-free status of EIS and SEIS schemes stands out as a powerful benefit for investors. Here’s why these schemes should be considered essential within a balanced investment portfolio: 💷 EIS & SEIS: Tax-Free Growth and CGT Deferral The increased CGT rates make EIS and SEIS schemes, which are fully exempt from Capital Gains Tax, more appealing than ever. Additionally, EIS offers the benefit of deferring capital gains from other investments, allowing investors to reinvest gains from other assets without an immediate tax liability. This deferral further strengthens the role of EIS within a diversified portfolio, enabling investors to manage their tax exposure strategically. ⚖️ Balancing Liquidity with Growth Potential While private market investments through EIS and SEIS present challenges around liquidity, their potential for tax-free growth, CGT deferral, and long-term returns makes them a valuable addition to a well-diversified portfolio. Relying solely on listed equities or funds could mean missing out on the unique tax efficiencies and growth potential these schemes provide. 📈 Optimising for Tax Efficiency and Long-Term Growth Beyond tax relief, EIS and SEIS also offer loss relief, enabling investors to balance tax efficiency with high-growth potential in early-stage ventures. Given the higher CGT rates, incorporating EIS/SEIS allocations alongside public market investments can enhance both tax efficiency and growth potential. As angel investors and investment groups navigate this changing landscape, the benefits of EIS and SEIS are hard to overlook.
