Alistair Macfarlane, NSTA Head of UK Carbon Storage Transportation and Storage, explained the significant role that the North Sea Transition Authority plays in the carbon storage industry at the CCUS2024 conference, hosted by the CCSA, today. He explained that there is sufficient capacity in the UK continental shelf to store centuries worths of emissions – the Committee for Climate Change insists that carbon storage is essential if the UK is to meet net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The NSTA is vital to the process from licensing to permitting, and Macfarlane explained that the NSTA’s role includes: · Licensing and permitting · Stewardship if the current 27 licences · Collaboration with external bodies, including on spatial coordination · Using our technical expertise to build a portfolio of carbon storage opportunities He also ran through the NSTA’s part in guiding a project from appraisal through to operation and closure, and concluded by discussing some potential timelines for current projects
About us
We regulate and influence the oil, gas and carbon storage industries. We help drive North Sea energy transition, realising the significant potential of the UK Continental Shelf as a critical energy and carbon abatement resource. We hold industry to account on halving upstream emissions by 2030. We work with government, industry and other regulators to accelerate the move to net zero while meeting the UK’s energy demand and security. We perform an effective net zero test and will not approve developments unless they pass it. We aim to be a value creator in everything we do, encouraging and enabling economic benefit and job creation across the UK. We drive greater efficiency through inclusive leadership, data, analysis, stewardship and the use of our powers.

The North Sea Transition Authority and The Crown Estate have today published a new Statement of Intent (https://lnkd.in/eU33vu-Q) to confirm joint aspirations in ensuring a more sustainable and closely co-ordinated management of the seabed. The aim is to build on close collaboration to date and now proactively share data between the two organisations, where possible. This will enable marine development and support a co-ordinated approach to the leasing and licensing of carbon storage, helping to make the UK a world-leading destination for CCUS project investment and the supply chain. This proactive and collaborative approach will support UK CCUS developments and help meet carbon storage targets, while considering other energy sectors, marine industries, sea users and the natural environment. The shared data will include spatial information such as GIS maps and co-ordinates of areas under consideration for leasing or licensing. In addition to setting out common priorities and challenges, the Statement of Intent outlines several joint actions, including: Implementing a data sharing agreement Working together and with other relevant bodies to drive coordinated action across sectors, agencies, and the UK Collaborating on carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) development Identifying and addressing challenges to coordinated seabed use Strengthening the evidence base for decision-making While not legally binding, this agreement represents a shared commitment to fostering sustainable marine development and supporting the UK's energy transition and builds on a previous agreement. #energytransition #dataanddigital

Speaking at #FloatingWind24 on the 'Harnessing innovation in floating offshore wind technologies' panel, our Chief Technical Officer Carlo Procaccini spoke on the barriers preventing key innovations being developed and implemented, and how to overcome these. He spoke on Innovation and Targeted Oil & Gas (INTOG) being an example of regulation and policy mandating decarbonisation and innovation in floating offshore wind, and how INTOG will open the road for larger ScotWind opportunities. "INTOG can accelerate investment in developments, grid connections and deployment of smart technology solutions for floating wind power. It's vital we build up and support the supply chain to support the offshore wind industry." Carlo went on to speak on how industry can best collaborate to advance technologies and accelerate deployment, stating offshore cross-industry collaboration will be "absolutely critical." "We at the NSTA have developed a hands on stewardship approach of our licence operators. We proactively seek the sharing of best practice across industry to collectively enhance performance." More than 20 million barrels of additional production could be brought online cheaply and cleanly by carrying out intervention work on 200 wells, the NSTA’s Director of New Ventures, Andrew Brooks C.Eng, F.I.Chem.E, said at Offshore Energies UK's Wells Conference in Aberdeen today. This was the main conclusion from a study of nearly 800 shut-in wells to understand what percentage could be brought back into production. We will hold a supply chain and operator workshop later in the year to discuss cost-effective ways to get this work up and running. The learnings and efficiencies identified from this initial tranche of wells could be used to restore many more, Andy said. He also urged industry to preserve its credibility by decommissioning wells in a timely and cost-effective way. Andy said this work can provide a bridge, linking oil and gas work with upcoming carbon storage projects which are going to generate huge opportunities for suppliers. NSTA Chief Executive Stuart Payne CBE said: “Huge congratulations to Emma in her new Climate Change Committee role. Her predecessor Chris Stark did a fantastic job in what is both a fascinating and challenging position. “Here at the NSTA we really look forward to building on a strong working relationship, delivering the #energytransition.”
The Committee is delighted to announce Emma Pinchbeck will be joining the Climate Change Committee as Chief Executive from 11 November. Emma will be supporting Professor Piers Forster in his current role as interim Chair and Baroness Brown as Chair of the Adaptation Committee. This is a period where the Committee will deliver important advice – in the next two years we will deliver both the Seventh Carbon Budget and the Climate Change Risk Assessment. Emma’s knowledge and expertise will help us in the development of this work. Climate action needs to speed up across both emissions’ reduction and climate adaptation policy. Secretary of State for the Department for Net Zero and Energy Security, Ed Miliband, said: "We are almost halfway through the decisive decade to halt climate change. Emma is joining the Climate Change Committee at a pivotal point, and following her leadership at Energy UK, is well placed to advise and challenge government on our net zero goals – ensuring we meet our climate commitments with ambition and urgency. “Emma’s extensive experience brings a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by industry, underscoring how the economics of clean energy are now aligned with climate policy, driving both environmental protection and economic growth. "I look forward to working closely with Emma and the Climate Change Committee to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of tackling climate change.” More: https://lnkd.in/erDW6jBh
