B Corp certified Coffee Roastery in Leeds. Focused on impact, prioritising people and planet before profit.

About us

North Star is a family united by a love for coffee and a desire to build a bright future for all it supports. Established as the first wholesale roastery in Leeds in 2013, the team work to deliver positive impact with every cup, mindfully sourcing specialty grade beans from growers we know and trust, and from farms that promote agroforestry techniques and social responsibility. Many of our purchases support initiatives focused on climate change resilience and youth/female empowerment. This approach, we feel, is key to growing an industry in which everyone participating can thrive. A commoditised supply chain has detached consumer from producer resulting in an unequal, unjust and volatile situation placing a question mark over the future of coffee. Our small team of dedicated coffee professionals work with integrity and authenticity to connect and put the humanity back into the coffee transaction.

Back in June, we achieved something pretty momentous! We, (the Roastery, Coffee Shop and Nova Bakehouse) joined a global community united to use business as a force for good. We first became aware of the B Corp program back in 2015. However, as with a lot of certification systems, particularly in the coffee industry, we were understandably suspicious. Seven years on with a growing team, supply chain network and customer base, the time has come to formalise what we do to ensure we are measuring our impact and most importantly, are kept accountable as we go forwards.  Joining B Corp UK has been no easy feat. It has taken us a year to complete the rigorous process in which our operations across the businesses have been carefully vetted and measured to ascertain how we walk our talk. A difficult thing to map given that much of what we do challenges the usual approaches to working 'sustainably'. You can read more about the areas we were appraised on by visiting the B Corp website. We will be publishing more info on our own website in the coming months but crucially, we have legally changed the structure of our business to state that we exist for the interests of all stakeholders NOT shareholders. This means that no matter what we may face in the coming years, North Star Coffee Holdings is legally obliged to make decisions that will benefit all of those it impacts (suppliers, employees, customers and environment). Quite literally meaning, people and planet first.  We will be publishing our first impact report next year to evaluate all the areas we try to positively impact across our wholesale coffee roastery, coffee shop and bakery. This enables total transparency to review how we work and so that we can seek to make constant improvements on what we do. The world is perhaps the most challenging it has ever been for businesses like ours and those of our customers but, despite rising costs at every turn, we argue that now is the time to take a step up.  We are so appreciative for the support we have been shown from day one, and for the community we have built. We are committing to get better and more impactful as we continue to grow up. 💫 Values brought to life 💫 One of our values at North Star Coffee Roasters is 'Collaborate Inside and Out'. It doesn't feel necessary to outline the benefits of collaboration, but it is safe to say we have got a lot out of it in the last 10 years. Last week was the perfect example of how much positivity can come from showing up to work being intentional about collaborating: 1. We kicked off the week with a full day training session for the host of new starters we have had throughout the business covering off our growth and impact strategy, coffee range and barista skills. 2. Representatives from our sales, marketing and coffee shop teams attended a cook-off in our Leeds Dock site to input on our new menu we are hoping to launch in the summer, ensuring it really speaks to our values and represents our desire to be an approachable space for people to interact with coffee in. 3. James Fairweather and I had an amazing call with Rory Gowan & Miguel from Caravela Coffee discussing the project we collaboratively established in El Salvador to build climate resilience and gender equity into that supply chain to chat about how we can take some learnings and move it forwards. 4. Most of the team headed down to The London Coffee Festival where we were hosted on an array of stands from La Marzocco's Mod Bar, FIORENZATO M.C. Srl and BWT- given an opportunity to showcase our delicious Tropical Punch coffee in collaboration with Tropic Coffee. 5. I had the pleasure of being asked to sit on a panel with fellow #bcorp boss babes Lisa L. (Dear Green Coffee Roasters) and Nicole Ferris (Climpson & Sons) to discuss how we move from 'niche to normal' when it comes to integrating impact into business. All in all, a very fulfilling, enjoyable and successful week! Wonder what this one has in store...

💫🍍 This week sees the release of a very special coffee for us here at North Star Coffee Roasters...a pineapple infused anaerobic natural from our long standing partnership with the Cyato washing station. 🍍💫 Not only is this our first 'infused' coffee, it marks our 7th year of working with Tropic Coffee and it gives me such pride to see how this partnership continues to develop. The world of coffee can at times feel a little bleak but partnerships like this really bring back the joy and fun. This coffee quite literally bursts with flavours of strawberry, mango and pineapple with an intriguing 'fizzy-like' mouthfeel. 🍓 🍍 ☕ 🌱 In choosing this coffee, customers are also directly contributing to the support of our collaborative impact project with Tropic which has seen us sponsor the preparation of 8ha of land with the planting of 20,000 coffee seedlings. These coffee plants have been distributed across 20 young people from the hillsides surrounding Cyato - all in an effort to support the next generation of coffee producers. April 2024 marks the first harvest of this coffee and we can't wait to visit in May to spend time with these young producers, capturing the processing of the beans and chatting about our future partnership. 🌱 Have a brew. Have an impact. It can be as simple as that. https://lnkd.in/eCj--KE5

One of the best things about the world of impactful business is the community that develops around it. Working with Fiona Ras-Jones remains to be one of the most impactful decisions we have made - not only has it helped us fine-tune our perspective on what we are here to do, we were also introduced to the very lovely Rob Fawkes and his podcast 'A Little Bit Radical' by Standing on Giants. I had listened to a couple of episodes (notably with Guy of Riverford Organic Farmers, Alex Beasley of Patagonia and Vineeta Greenwood of Wholegrain Digital) and LOVED the format and insight - particularly diving deeper into what has made all of these people think a little bit radically. So I was pretty flabbergasted when I was asked if I would like to be a guest... Back in September, Rob Fawkes and I sat down and discussed: ⭐️Rethinking Coffee, Work, and Parenthood ⭐️Coffee Supply Chain and Motivation ⭐️Challenges Facing the Coffee Industry ⭐️The Impact of B Corp Accreditation ⭐️Importance of Empathy and Accountability It was a deep and immensely enjoyable conversation about the North Star Coffee Roasters journey so far and you can listen to it now wherever you get your podcasts: https://lnkd.in/ehuCEk3Y

At North Star HQ, we've been hard at work crafting something special, and we couldn't be more grateful for your unwavering support. Today, we're thrilled to introduce this year's edition of our beloved Festive Blend. We set out to create a blend that embodies the spirit of the season – rich, decadent, and full of warmth. The result? A delightful fusion of spiced custard, orange zest, and dried fruit, carefully brought to life by three distinct components, each adding a unique flavour to the festive party. First up, the Brazil Montanari lays a solid foundation, infusing the blend with the comforting notes of milk chocolate and roasted nuts, ensuring a perfectly balanced cup. Next, we turned to the incredible Cyato washing station in the Nyamasheke District of Western Rwanda, combining this year's natural and anaerobic lots. These coffees add a layer of complexity with their exquisite strawberry jam-like character, enhancing the blend's depth and uniqueness. Finally, Finca La Bolsa's natural processed lot takes the spotlight, tying everything together with its bold and irresistible profile, delivering a burst of sticky dried fruit that truly embodies the spirit of festivity. With this year’s Festive Blend, you can expect a well-balanced and smooth coffee, rich in character, and perfect for your cosy moments. It's versatile too, suitable for metal filter methods, and can be enjoyed with or without milk. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for supporting our business this year. It has meant the world to us. We can’t wait for you to try it and let us know what you think > https://lnkd.in/efjZqfvX NS x
