Successful candidates will join a three-year apprenticeship programme, earning over £19,000 a year whilst studying for a Level 3 qualification in rail engineering. The closing date for applications is Sunday, 23 February. For more information and details of how to apply, visit: https://lnkd.in/gy-Q8E3. Megan Van Bergen, who is in the second year of an engineering apprenticeship, said: “I’m really enjoying the role and I’ve learnt a lot about the rail industry. Everyone has been so friendly and helpful – it’s a very supportive environment in which to learn the ropes. Once I’ve completed my apprenticeship there are a lot of roles and opportunities that I have my eye on.” This week, we will be taking part in a special careers event at the Locomotion railway museum in County Durham. 🎉 As a proud supporter of Bradford 2025 City of Culture celebrations, we are excited to welcome a number of celebrations that will be taking part throughout the year. We are expecting millions of passengers to travel across the network to theatre and dance performances, live music events, film screenings and art exhibitions that will be held across the district this year. Our staff have been very busy making improvements to Bradford Interchange and Bradford Forster Square, excited to welcome the year-long event and on going celebrations. Retail team leader, Jonathon Mountain said: “We’re looking at all the events that are coming up so we can prepare. We want to keep people moving and get them where they need to go.” Local staff believe the celebrations will put the Bradford "on the map” by showcasing everything the city has to offer. Here at Northern, we have been working hard to ensure that the railway is safe for those who are travelling with us, particularly those who are vulnerable. In a recent review under the Safeguarding on Rail Scheme, our efforts were acknowledged by the British Transport Police. A special mention was directed to David Wilkinson, our Community Safety Manager at Northern, for his work in this area. Our colleagues receive special training to help those using the railway in response to the increasing number of vulnerable people using the network. Throughout 2024, Northern employees intervened in several critical situations: - In July, a conductor ensured a passenger received urgent medical care as her condition deteriorated onboard. 👏 - In August, another conductor assisted a distressed 13-year-old boy. 👏 - In September, two staff members at Blackburn station located a missing eight-year-old girl. 👏 Matt Rice, chief operating officer at Northern, said: “Safeguarding vulnerable people on the railway is everyone’s responsibility and I’ll bet each and every one of my traincrew and station colleagues could give you an example of a situation that could have ended very different if someone hadn’t intervened." This week, we welcomed members of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) and The Royal Yorkshire Regiment to Leeds station and Neville Hill TrainCare Centre for a tour of career opportunities here at Northern. 🚆 We want to encourage more people who have worked in the armed forces or currently serve as reservists to apply for roles, as their skills are a perfect fit for rail. Craig Lawley left the military in 2007 and recently joined us as an engineering infrastructure asset manager, he said: “Given the purpose of the railways, as a critical transport service, it needs people with discipline, who are thorough and can follow instructions implicitly, to keep things running smoothly and safely for passengers." In 2021, we signed the Armed Forces Covenant, a commitment to supporting the employment of veterans and recognising military skills and qualifications across our business. We also have an Armed Forces Group, which connects and supports staff who have previously served in the military. Lisa Leighton, People Director, said: “We have a range of rewarding roles to offer men and women in the armed forces who are looking to take on a new challenge." If you have left or are in the process of leaving the military and are looking to put your skills and experience to use on the railway, please register for job alerts on the Northern website at: https://lnkd.in/daGx7CB Read more about this story here 👉 https://lnkd.in/e7vaQPvi

🎉 We are excited to announce our newest transformation in traincrew training here at Northern. The first prototype of the semi-immersive static cab simulator has now been delivered. The replica features video footage covering 610 miles of real Northern routes, significantly improving the learning experience for new drivers across the North of England. Another 24 of the static cab replicas has been ordered. These static units will augment six full-immersion motion platform simulators and two integrated crew training units featuring passenger door control panels. These are set to be introduced to our training academies later this year. It is part of a major transformation in how we train our traincrew and will speed up the time it takes for crew to achieve their train and route competence. Lisa Leighton, our people director at Northern, said: “We have over 3,400 drivers and conductors based across our network and it’s important each and every one of them has the skills and knowledge to perform at their best." Exciting times lie ahead as we test the prototype! 🚆 Read more about the story here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/g3F2qBhh

A charitable organization named 'The Station Building Mytholmroyd', led by Geoff and Sue Mitchell, has been redeveloping an old Grade II station building for the last 18 years. Since 2007, volunteers have been working on plans to transform it into a creative center featuring a community room on the ground floor and seven units intended for local artists. 🎨 Despite facing multiple challenges, including floods and the Covid-19 pandemic along the way, the group hope to open later in the year. The station building was originally opened in 1874 by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, with a booking hall, waiting rooms, an office for the station master, and a ticket collector's office. However, after its closure in 1984, it fell into disrepair. Kerry Peters, our Regional Director, said: "Geoff and Sue's determination and perseverance over the last 18 years has been nothing short of amazing. We're really excited to see them finish this project and open the community hub for the people of Mytholmroyd later this year." Network Rail began the renovation and made the building structurally sound in 2018, after the project received a £110,000 grant from The Railway Heritage Trust and support from Historic England. It was also awarded £293,193 by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) in the third round of the Community Ownership Fund, last year. We want to remind passengers that vaping has not been permitted on board our trains or at any of our stations since a ban was introduced in 2014. Over the last year, 77 passengers have raised concerns about vaping in post-journey surveys since April 2024. 29 have submitted written complaints and another 59 have made complaints to Northern on social media. Vaping can also set off smoke alarms, forcing the traincrew to temporarily halt the service and delay everyone on board while safety checks are carried out. Matt Rice, our Chief Operating Officer, said: “We want to be clear that vaping is not permitted on our trains or at any of our stations. We are encouraging people who travel on our services to be considerate of others so everyone can enjoy a pleasant journey." Read more about this story here 🚫🚆 https://lnkd.in/eT3nCt5r

We’ve moved a step closer to getting up to 450 new trains for the North. 🚆 Major train manufacturers have been invited to begin negotiations to supply new trains to operate across the North of England. The new trains will be introduced on a phased basis, replacing the oldest units in Northern’s existing fleet, most of which have been in service since the 1980s and 90s. The trains will feature a mix of electric, multi-modal (diesel/electric), and battery-powered models, ensuring greater efficiency and sustainability. This will be the largest ever investment in our fleet to serve the North. Read more at https://lnkd.in/eubCCCKP
