  • This week, we have once again signed the Catchment Management Declaration, which aims to accelerate a multisector approach to water catchment management. We joined over 110 organisations – from business, agriculture, regulation, academia, government, the public sector and civil society – to sign the declaration and this week, we took the opportunity against the backdrop of the IWA World Water Conference. The declaration aligns to our Environmental Strategy ‘Restore and Regenerate’ which was published in September 2023. This strategy builds on what we have already achieved as well as setting the direction for the future to protect and enhance our region’s rivers, coasts, and wildlife habitats. The declaration which was launched by the (then) Prince of Wales in 2018, outlines six principles for sustainable management of water catchments: 💧Recognition that water is a valuable and shared resource 🤝Support for action through cross-sector partnership and collaboration ⚖️Support the improvement of existing governance frameworks to facilitate delivery 🧑🤝🧑Work together to increase awareness among citizens of their role in positive action ⌛Convene to share progress, best practice and demonstrate positive action 🖋️Commitment to deliver against these principles throughout business operations Sustainable management of water resources can at times be challenging, but in rising to this challenge there is an opportunity collaborate across sectors to champion our collective stewardship of natural assets and resources. Against the backdrop of the IWA World Water Congress and the UK government’s review of the Environmental Improvement Plan, this is the ideal time to highlight the ambition that UK water stakeholders have to chart a firm course towards cleaner, healthier and more resilient water catchments. • Some of our teams were away in Canada last week, showcasing some of our most innovative ideas... They attended the International Water Association (IWA) World Water Congress in Toronto, and shared some of our ideas with other delegates, such as MoWBI - which is a mobile device to help keep customers in supply in the event of a burst. Our very own Libby also hosted a Women in Water panel session, which gave some great insight into the opportunities for women in STEM across the sector. Well done guys!

  • Investment at a County Durham reservoir has helped to enhance safety at one of Weardale’s most iconic visitor attractions. Our £3m project at Tunstall Reservoir, in Wolsingham, included maintenance and resilience work at the site, building in enhancements to the dam and spillway that will add protection in the case of emergencies. Working with our partners Esh-Stantec, we filled an old shaft and tunnel, originally designed for drainage purposes, with expert support from mine rescue teams being required due to the necessary confined space working. Work started in the summer of 2023. A new transfer pipe was also installed within the structure of the dam, meaning water could be safely drained down from the reservoir more quickly in case of emergencies, helping to lower levels more rapidly and increase safety. On the spillway itself, concrete slabs were overlaid on old stone blocks, to further preserve the structure. Esh Group Stantec

Ready for kick-off! Members of our team, and partners United Living Group, took time out from an important water mains renewal project to help a local football team prepare for the new season. We’re currently working in Annfield Plain, County Durham, renewing 26km of water mains and supporting customers by offering free replacements for lead pipes. While carrying out the £4.9m project to protect water quality and supplies in the area, the team took time out to visit Wearside League Premier Division side Annfield Plain AFC's 2,900 capacity Derwent Park ground. There, they carried out strimming on the crowd standing area, painted the stands and dugouts, and weeded the footpath, helping the 134-year-old club get ready for pre-season. Our people used time from our Just An Hour volunteering scheme to carry out the work.

🌿Enhancements at Northumberland’s Hauxley Nature Reserve are coming along nicely! Ruby, from our Bluespaces team, has been to check things out, as Northumberland Wildlife Trust continue to deliver the Hauxley Hide and Trail renovation project. Part-funded by our team who carried out upgrades to a local sewage pumping station, via our Bluespaces initiative, the upgrades include: - Upgrade Ponteland Hide, improving visitor safety and experience, and making the facility fully wheelchair and pushchair accessible. - Install a new water-themed brass rubbing trail, to enhance the interactive and educational experience for visitors. - Improve drainage on the site’s circular footpath, by redirecting water in a way that has the added benefit of enhancing wetland habitats. - Enhance South Wood, with tree planting to grow the woodland, foster biodiversity, and contribute to the ecological health of the reserve.
