Technology for a Low Carbon World
About us
Nova Pangaea Technologies is a cleantech company that has created a patented technology called REFNOVA®. REFNOVA produces 2G ethanol to decarbonise aviation and a natural carbon removal product called biochar. REFNOVA® converts non-food derived agricultural and woody biomass from sustainable sources into bioethanol and biochar. The 2G ethanol can be utilised through the alcohol to jet (ATJ) pathway to enable the production of advanced 2G biofuels such as sustainable aviation fuel. The biochar, a natural carbon removal product, has the ability to deliver an immediate decarbonisation impact.

Featuring Paula Kuchcik our all-encompassing Laboratory Technician who analyses samples for the demonstration plant and is involved in analytical method development, which leads to standard operating procedures for Nova Pangaea Technologies laboratory. Paula is also responsible for the administration and maintenance of the laboratory and its equipment and oversees purchasing and inventory. Paula says: “My background is in forensic science and I really like the elements of techniques, critical analysis and precision which allows me to do key work with samples on the plant floor and in the laboratory. No day is the same for me and I enjoy the variety and responsibility. I can spend time in my hard hat and safety boots moving around the demonstration plant and then be at my desk to record my findings, and at other times manage the laboratory. Lou Lightfoot, Chief Human Resources Officer, notes: “At NPT we encourage those starting out in the field of work to try and test their skills. Paula is a great success story as she came to NPT as an apprentice and excelled in her work gaining a permanent position as a laboratory technician. She has a very scientific mind and brings methodology expertise, which has been put to good use at NPT. Her extensive research and analytical skills have also made significant contributions to our work. We are very glad to have Paula onboard and see the excellent work she does with dedication and commitment.” #sustainableaviation #sustainableaviationfuel #renewableenergy #renewablesindustry #renewables #cleanenergytransition #cleanenergyfuture #netzero #netzerocarbon #climatechange #innovation #leaders #sustainabledevelopment #sustainablefuture #saf #decarbonisation #NPT

Nova Pangaea Technologies welcomed members of HSBC’s senior leadership team to tour its demonstration facility. As the company further progresses its plans to deliver First of a Kind, it is engaging and strengthening its strategic partnership ecosystem, which includes financial institutions with global reach. This visit follows on from HSBC’s invitation to NPT to attend the Great Futures launch event held in Riyadh in May of this year. HSBC was a principal partner at the event led by UK Government’s Department for Business and Trade to bring together opportunities for UK businesses in Saudi Arabia.

Seven Nova Pangaea Technologies runners took part in the Yorkshire marathon yesterday to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Congratulations to the marathon relay team of NPT CEO, Sarah Ellerby, @Mitch Blair, Simon Wright, Gary Bowdler, Thomas Nicol, PhD, Jonathan Holliday. Neil Hindle took on the challenge of doing the run on his own. As a team, they achieved the 26 mile event with strength, stamina and enthusiasm. With a respectable place attained their training commitment and hard work came to fruition. NPT is proud of our runners and their fantastic accomplishment, and thanks to everyone for their kind and generous donations to Macmillan Cancer Support. Celebrating all Yorkshire Marathon runners who took part and we look forward to participating again next year. #NPTrunners #Yorkshiremarathon

Nova Pangaea Technologies Chief Commercial Officer Jonathan Wood spoke at Argus Biofuels Europe Conference in London yesterday on the ethanol-to-jet (EtJ) pathway. As a panellist, he discussed how EtJ unlocks access to very material feedstock pools which can enable the scale up required to meet the needs of low carbon fuels such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). He noted the following: “Advanced ethanol is made from waste biomass and it can secure an additional income stream for rural and farming communities. Furthermore, various kinds of waste biomass can be used making EtJ a pathway which can be deployed in all regions according to what waste biomass is most available. “NPT, in partnership with British Airways and LanzaJet, are progressing the Speedbird project in the UK. This encompasses 4 NPT plants producing 190 mlpa of 2G ethanol, which following processing at the LanzaJet EtJ facility, generate 103 mlpa of SAF and 10 mlpa of renewable diesel. British Airways intends to offtake the SAF produced at the facility to help reduce its net carbon emission in line with its targets for 2030 and beyond. “NPT’s REFNOVA process produces not just 2G ethanol but also biochar, which sequesters carbon and can be deployed in farming and horticulture as a soil enhancer, or used in construction. The carbon removed via the biochar means the 2G ethanol and SAF end product can potentially have a negative carbon intensity. “Policies such as those being introduced in the UK are helping to generate the demand pull, with a linear ramp up of the SAF mandate from 2025 and higher incentives for better GHG reductions – which is after all the objective. Supply side initiatives such as the revenue support mechanism will also be key to underpin returns and provide the assurance investors need to enable the energy transition. “In short, the 2G ethanol pathway can be scaled up now, with huge growth potential, low or even negative carbon intensity, and feedstock flexibility enabling deployment in all regions of the world, including the Global South.” https://lnkd.in/e9D7rkYV

Featuring Thomas Nicol, PhD our Senior Research Scientist who joined Nova Pangaea Technologies in 2020 and is engaged in several projects with the technical team. Tom conducts both internal and external research with multidisciplinary teams of engineers and scientists. His specialty revolves around the conversion, extraction and utilisation of products from lignocellulosic biomass, and he works on laboratory, pilot, and pre-commercial scale process development through both theoretical, computational, and statistically designed experimental research. These have included mass balance and life cycle analyses of the process. Tom says, “Working with NPT for the last 4 years has been a rewarding and engaging challenge which has allowed me to support the progress of a novel sustainable technology that will drive the UK’s clean fuel transition. Non-fossil derived chemicals and fuels are critical in the coming decades and the research work I do with NPT is helping to enable their development at an industrial scale.” Tom was a member of the scientific committee for the Biorefineries Technology Professionals conference 2024 where he gave a talk on the use of NPT's biochar as a form of carbon sequestration. Sarah Ellerby, NPT CEO, comments: “Tom amplifies the NPT core values and is a valuable member of our small but mighty team. He is analytical but an originator of ideas and solutions which we want to nurture. A passionate and purposeful scientist in pursuit of our mission – to decarbonise and enable net zero. I’ve had the privilege of watching him develop into his current role and look forward to seeing him flourish within the next phase of the business.” #NPTPeople #Research #Science #REFNOVAtechnology #Decarbonisation
