  • Today has been one of the hardest days for me as a social worker and ISW Today I was informed that a mother that I have been working with for 2 years had sadly passed away last night from an overdose. Together we went through a journey of incredible change; she got clean and with support she was able to keep her child in her care that she so longed for. Sadly, when everything was looking great and the transition into the community was due to start, despite being supported, her demons began to creep in and so did the self destruction. During my assessments, I took and she shared lots of videos and pictures with me, some of which I used as evidence in her assessment to evidence the progress she had made. Sadly as soon as everything she had been working so very hard to achieve became real so did the relapse. Despite being given a second chance the power of addiction proved too hard for her to overcome and the risks from her active addiction became too high for her child to remain in her care. Resulting in her assessment ending negatively but with lots of strengths about the love she had for her child. Today I realised the power of forming relationships from those moments we shared by her wanting to send me pictures and videos updates of all the great things they had been doing. To suddenly realising these would be the only memory this child would now have of his mother and this made me really sad but honored that I have been able to share these precious moments with the social work team to be part of his memory box. I do not regret any of my decisions. However, do I know that my final assessment and the evidence I gave likely had some part to play in what led to her OD. Yes it did. However I am so glad that I took the time to really capture who she was in her assessment and celebrate her strengths for when her child looks back on his records he will see this. Today I am reminded of the importance of relationships, the importance of getting information right and to be grateful for all I have and feel glad that I was able to tell her story. #socialwork #independentsocialworker #addiction #drugs #human #assessments

Just now I had a parent contact me that I assessed last year. At the time I was told he was dangerous, a drug dealer and he was using his teenage son to run drugs. Dad would not engage with any professional or the police and his teenage son would be subjected to lots of stop and searches, lots of PPNs and Intel of the things he was allegedly doing. There was lots of noise and assumptions but no evidence! Turns out Dad was fine, he was difficult to engage as he felt under threat all the time and was sick of the allegations and untruths being told. By giving him space to tell his story and feel understood came change. As I stood back as an ISW having completed my assessment, I did not know what would happen. Fast forward to a call from Dad just now to tell me he engaged with professionals and his teenage son has reenaged in education and employment and things are so much better. To hear Dad felt confident enough to make a formal C100 application for contact with his child that he has been stopped from seeing for nearly 8 years was great. The progress they have made is amazing. I was really touched that he took the time to call me all of these months later to thank me and say this was all down to my report and how I made them feel during the assessment. I'm honoured. My assessment was controversial and went against professional narrative and challenged cultural difference and acceptance of diverse parenting. I am so grateful for the positive impact this has had. Have you got difficult families that you struggle to engage or teenagers that you are worried are being exploited or you just don't know! Nucleus can support with a variety of assessments that are always fair and balanced. #assessments #feedback #supportingfamilies #localauthority #court #advocacy.

👹 I was every social worker's nightmare😈 ➡️ Age 15 I was in a relationship with a 38 year old man 🤯🫣😱 ➡️ Family told me you'll be in prison or pregnant! ➡️16 I was pregnant ➡️ married at 18 ➡️ at 18 came baby 2 and by 23 baby 3🤱 ➡️ Trapped in a domestically abusive relationship for many years ➡️ I was pig-headed thinking I was in control 🔴 Unfortunately there was no intervention 🔴 🔵 If I had the direction and support I needed in my life, I believe it could have been so different. 🔵 That's why I 💕 love social work and I knew this was my calling. This is what I wanted to do, and how positive intervention can change the trajectory of someone's life. 🔵 I was lucky, fast forward 25 years. I am no longer in that marriage. I am a strong and independent person with a husband who adores me and 5 children! 🔵 2 of my children are now social workers and one is travelling the world🌍 One thing that never changed for me was my desire to be a better parent than I experienced! I am incredibly proud of all of my children, but moral of the story, your past does not determine your future and with social work intervention we can all change! This is always in the forefront of my mind when undertaking assessments in ensuring the history of the person I am assessing is heard and understood! #socialimpact #socialwork #socialinnovation
