We are dedicated to improving the social, emotional, mental health and wellbeing of children and young people.

About us

Pupils facing social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) challenges can be withdrawn and isolated, suffering in silence, others display hugely challenging and disruptive behaviour that significantly affects those around them. All are in desperate need of nurture - a different approach to learning that prioritises relationships and wellbeing. Research has shown that a nurturing approach to education works for all pupils, helping every child to learn. Nurture gets to the heart of a child’s challenges and supports children and young people to build connections and resilience. It is a highly effective way of supporting improved behaviour and increased attendance in schools, leading to better attainment and reduced exclusions. nurtureuk is the national charity dedicated to using nurturing approaches to improve children and young people’s life chances. We give education professionals the proven tools, training and support they need to implement nurture in schools and remove barriers to learning. We also work with policy makers to make nurture a cornerstone of education in the UK.

A new report from Pro Bono Economics finds that the number of children and young people in the UK reporting low wellbeing has risen significantly—from fewer than one in six in 2015 to one in four in 2022. Poor wellbeing during teenage years is also linked to lower economic outcomes in adulthood, highlighting the urgency of addressing this issue. 📣 The report calls for better data and evidence to understand the drivers behind declining wellbeing levels and to effectively target solutions to the right schools, communities, and individuals. At nurtureuk, our research shows that around a quarter of pupils with moderate social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs remain hidden. Yet, when appropriate support is implemented after assessment, there is a 23% increase in the number of pupils with no apparent SEMH needs within just five months. Furthermore, 92% of schools that successfully assessed all their pupils would recommend this approach. ✅ We stand with Pro Bono Economics and other charities in backing the roadmap for universal wellbeing measurement to enable better decision-making and targeted support. Read the full report via the link in this post. 📄✨

In their 'Supporting School Attendance' guide, the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) recommend building a culture of community and belonging for pupils. The nurturing approach creates this culture by prioritising building trusting relationships that help pupils to feel #SafeInSchool. 💚

Studies show that healthy breakfasts benefit both children’s health and learning. School breakfast clubs are vital for providing a nutritious breakfast for pupils, helping them have a great start to the day and feel #HappyInSchool. 🍎🥚🥣 This National Schools #BreakfastWeek, we’re asking the government to ensure all school wraparound care considers SEMH needs. ☑️ Read more on our four step plan: https://bit.ly/3AN4jKd

Nurture as a practice means relating to and coaching children and young people to help them form positive relationships, build resilience and improve their social, emotional and mental health and #wellbeing. 💫 When used in school, nurture improves attendance, behaviour and attainment, and ensures every child is able to learn. 📝💭 A solid understanding of the Six Principles of Nurture is crucial for education professionals looking to implement #nurture in their settings. The ‘Who is Losing Learning?’ report by IPPR highlights the disproportionate #exclusion of children who face difficult personal challenges and reveals that despite mounting costs, the current system is failing increasing numbers of children and young people. We firmly believe that through collaboration, we can address the #exclusioncrisis holistically. We look forward to contributing evidence-based recommendations to the ‘Who’s Losing Learning Solutions Council’. https://lnkd.in/ejsyTqwu
