It’s no secret that New Zealand and the United Kingdom have a lot in common. In The Hinrich Foundation's Sustainable Trade Index 2024, New Zealand and the United Kingdom find themselves in the top 10, retaining the first and second position, respectively, for the third edition of the index. Today at the High Commission we welcomed Young Ambassador for The King's Trust, Fanny Beckman to shadow High Commissioner, Phil Goff as a part of the Ambassador for a Day initiative, run by Embassies and High Commissions around the world. The King’s Trust has supported over a million young people across the world like Fanny, empowering and supporting them to become changemakers. With the aim of celebrating emerging leaders, Fanny was invited to learn about the variety of work that the High Commission engages in. Today’s programme included a visit to local charity MerryGoRound, founded by New Zealand Society UK New Zealander of the Year, Julia Maile. From there, Fanny had the opportunity to speak to some of the women in diplomacy, learning about the range of work that we do here in the UK! We wrapped the day with a visit to our neighbours High Commission of Canada in the United Kingdom | Haut–commissariat du Canada au Royaume–Uni and their latest exhibition: Between Elsewhere and Possibility.

Day 2 of #CHOGM2024 saw MFAT’s Angela Hassan-Sharp (United Nations, Human Rights and Commonwealth Divisional Manager) taking part in a panel discussion at the Women’s Forum. Forum participants got to hear from a panel of powerful wāhine on how to effectively tackle common problems faced by women and girls from different backgrounds. The principle of “leaving no one behind” is central to all UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal 5 on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment. It also echoes the core message of the UN Declaration of Human Rights: “All persons are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” Other panel members were Dame Carol Black, the Commonwealth Special Envoy for Ageing Better 🇬🇧, Providence Umurungi, Chairperson for the Rwanda National Commission for Human Rights 🇷🇼, and Sovaia Sisi, Gender Lead for the Pacific Disability Forum 🇫🇯. Fa'amalo (well done) to all involved!
