Autism Assessments Waiting Times As of September 2024, 204,876 people were waiting for an autism assessment in England, new NHS data has revealed. That’s more than the population of Oxford to put it in perspective. Thats a 96% increase from this point two years ago, which is just not ok. Guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) states that, no-one should wait longer than 13 weeks, however the reality is majority of people are waiting longer than the recommended 13 weeks- 89% of people in fact. An autism diagnosis is vital to someone understanding their identity and who they are. Yes a diagnosis should not be needed to access support, but thats not reality and even if that was the case, everyone has the right to understand who they are. Our nursing team would also argue its also important to know if someone autistic, so we can reduce health inequalities and pick up early co occurring conditions which have an increase prevelance within our autistic community. The diagnosis process for autism in a modernised health system that is fit for the future must be timely and use a standardised process for assessments that meet NICE guidelines. Last year NHSE published the Autism Assessment Framework and Operational Guidance last year to reinforce standards for assessment which we have been following since it's publication. However, ICBs (Intergrated Care Boards) are not always able to follow the framework due to a lack of funding amd needing to priortise cost efficiencies. Sufficient funding is needed to establish this standardised process and bring down waiting times. If we can be of support, to your ICB or local service, then contact us at assessments@autismoxford.org.uk, are CQC registered team are here ready to help. https://lnkd.in/exq53rFE #autismoxforduk
