Born of Coal but I was made in Blyth!   It’s difficult to accept that I’m reaching the end of my working life! Spanning over 4 decades I’ve had the privilege to work for four bastions of the North East economy ranging from manufacturer, to consultancy, to infrastructure owner to research organisation. To be part of such a rich engineering heritage has been both life enriching and truly humbling. If you’d like to read more see below.   I’m leaving the Catapult in the very capable hands of our new Chief Executive Steve Foxley, and the excellent Cristina Garcia Duffy, who will assume my responsibilities in the near term.   Thank you to everyone who I’ve had the pleasure to work with, to those that have taught me, mentored me, supported me, counselled me and tolerated me throughout my career, it’s been a blast and a privilege! I'm looking forward to the next Phase of my life, but my passion for Engineering and the North East will not dim!   Click here to read my blog: https://lnkd.in/eXuJgSeS

STEMing the skills gap – investing early works! Our changing economy is creating new jobs and demanding different skills, but the UK has a well publicised STEM skills gap: in 2024/25, STEM subjects represented just 15% of enrolments in higher education Higher Education across the UK. My recent experience tells me that we can make a huge impact on that challenge. Since 2016 I have been fortunate to work with Levenmouth Academy in Fife, managing Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult Levenmouth Demonstration Turbine community support fund. The fund provides a wide array of activities and equipment to enhance the provision of STEM activities to pupils throughout the school. In that time, we have seen the total number of leavers going into a STEM destination jump from just 6% to 37%. Female leavers going into a STEM destination has increased from 9% to 35%. If you still think STEM education is just about the periodic table and test tubes, read my blog to see how a little investment and a lot of inspiration from amazing teachers is making a really tangible difference. https://lnkd.in/duj-z-Sq Raytheon UK SGN QPE Ltd Foundation Scotland Fife Council Scottish Renewables RenewableUK Jenny Gilruth MSP Richard Baker #STEM #Skills #offshorewind #Fife #education
