"Nature is the national wealth service" Chair of Natural England, Dr Tony Juniper CBE on the launch of 'The State of Natural Capital Report', published by Natural England, to provide 'a unique insight into the vital role that healthy nature plays in underpinning our economic health'. “For years now we have taken more from Nature than it can supply sustainably. We are in effect running down our assets as we strip away nature’s ability to provide clean water and carbon storage by degrading soils, which increases water pollution and sends harmful emissions into the atmosphere, affecting human health and adding to consumer bills – be it your weekly shop or household bills. It’s time we treasured this national wealth service as much as we do the National Health Service. We must move beyond just seeing the health of our economy and our country in terms of pure GDP, we have to incorporate the health of our natural capital and its ability to sustain our economy into our understanding of the condition of our nation. Nature provides huge social benefits. Green spaces provide £25.6 billion of ‘welfare value’ every year and a range of studies have found that the presence of green spaces, including parks and trees, improves mental health and can lead to a reduction in crime in urban areas. However around 1 in 5 people do not live within 15 minutes of a green space, and they tend to be from more deprived communities. This link between green space, social inequalities and differences in health outcomes remains strong and persistent. This has to change, we to have think differently.”* Biophilia is the love of living things and nature. Biophilic design is an evolutionary design approach that considers everything from strategy, layout, materials, lighting through to sensory responses to spaces. Let's take more action to design sustainably and give a greater number of people access to the benefits of connecting with nature. We are still hard-wired to thrive in spaces that have an abundance of natural sensory information yet the spaces we spend the most of our time in rarely considers the need for nature connection. Biophilic design supports creation of spaces with the human senses in mind, spaces where we can benefit from nature and natural elements (source: Creating Positive Spaces - By Designing for Cognitive & Sensory Wellbeing - Oliver Heath Design & Interface - accessed via our website). The benefits of natural sounds are numerous, both physical - stimulating the nervous system, reducing stress and creating positive places to inhabit and work in. We love the concept of the Tune Into Nature Music Prize 🌿🎶🌊🦜that is open to musicians aged 18-30 with original music that collaborates and connects with nature. Have your read the resources for the Built Environment from Business for Nature? It highlights: 🌿 Impacts on nature 🌿 Dependencies on nature 🌿 Priority actions and opportunities The overview lists priority actions towards a nature-positive future as: 🌍 Avoid further terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitat conversion – Site new buildings and infrastructure responsibly by locating them in previously-impacted areas to prevent further loss of natural habitat. 🌍 Prioritize re-use and retrofitting over demolition. Seek opportunities to adopt circular approaches for new builds – with a focus on designing new buildings and infrastructure to maximize their lifespans. 🌍 Select materials with nature in mind and invest in circularity – Include nature-related criteria in the procurement of raw materials. 🌍 Promote Nature-based Solutions (NbS) as an alternative for, or in addition to, grey infrastructure at design stage. Read the overview and report here https://lnkd.in/e-4w-NEv Oliver Heath Design are an industry-leading design practice who've been specialising in biophilic design for the last 20 years. Did you read The Times article on the John Lewis Partnership Build to Rent scheme? JLP pinpointed biophilic design as a desirable point of difference when researching their approach to build to rent. Oliver Heath Design were brought onto the project in an ongoing role as biophilic design consultants as JLP branch into the residential sector by developing their existing Waitrose properties. We have been guiding the schemes in their unique take on build to rent, while ensuring that each individual development was conscious of the existing surrounding landscape. The Times deep dive into JLP BTR It was an absolute pleasure to sit down with my colleague Sophie Hine Hine and BTR design guru Russell Pedley to discuss our BTR strategy with Melissa York for the Bricks & Mortar section in today’s edition of The Times. Melissa’s piece is an extensively researched deep dive into our BTR strategy, focusing on the service and the mindset we are bringing to the housing sector through a blend of long-term thinking, considered design, and a service culture that replicates all the great things about our retail brands. It has certainly been a rollercoaster year, but it’s great to have this sort of mainstream coverage about BTR. Hopefully, this can help many of the other fantastic businesses in the sector grow their canvases over the coming year, given the positive political backdrop towards house building.
