It was a busy October for the delivery partners of the Blood Donation Awareness Project - going out into the community supporting Black History Month and also encouraging the uptake of blood donors with Black heritage. We've been learning so much in the process. For example, did you know: Black donors are 10 times more likely to have blood types that are needed to treat patients with sickle cell. If you know anyone who may be suitable to donate or are able to donate yourself, please help us spread the importance of signing up to be a donor. Modupe D. A busy week last week for some of the team who visited 2 schools and a college delivering NHS Health Checks ❤️🩹 In August and September, we reached out to schools and large organisations to make them aware of the benefits of having Health Checks in the workplace and how they can support their wellbeing initiatives. Let's just say - it made for a busy October. And we're glad! The very purpose of the Community Health Checks model we're delivering is to help reach people who face barriers when it comes to booking in for one at their GP practice. And from our recent conversations, people are grateful that these checks can be done out and about as staff don't always have the luxury of time to go have a check done. 🔴 October is #BlackHistoryMonth, and this year’s theme is Reclaiming The Narratives. At #PathLabSupportCIC, we are proud to partner with six local organisations to amplify patient stories and reclaim the narrative around Sickle Cell Disease and blood donation. 📢 Through the #LiverpoolCityRegion Blood Donation Awareness Project, we’ve joined forces with #GraceWellnessCIC, One Wirral CIC, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust #LiverpoolSickleCellandThalassemiaSupportGroup, and #GraceHolaLtd. This project, funded by NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), aims to: 🩸 Raise awareness of Sickle Cell Disease through lived patient experiences and various campaigns. 🩸 Promote blood donation registration, the recruitment of blood donors and local champions across the Liverpool City Region. In collaboration with Wonderfully Made Woman, we recently held a radio interview at Allfm 96.9 in Manchester, sharing powerful patient stories and emphasising the critical need for blood donors—especially those from Black communities—to support those living with this life-threatening condition. We are grateful to Mr. #AlhagiFatty for sharing his impactful lived experience patient story, and to the Wonderfully Made Woman Team in Manchester for the radio interview opportunity. If you're registered to a Wallasey or Leasowe GP practice and are listed as a current or former smoker, you'll likely receive a text message (very soon) with information and inviting you to have a lung screening. It’s a screening programme for people aged between 55 and 74 who have a smoking history, to help reach those most at risk of lung cancer. Over the course of the next 18 months, will be rolled out across all of Wirral. ⚠️ The Cheshire & Merseyside programme has diagnosed over 412 lung cancers, 80% of which have been caught at Stage 1 and 2 - so it’s already saved lives! 📱 If your initial text message gets missed or ignored, you'll then receive a letter with further info.
