Enjoyed speaking about Investment Opportunities in Sport and all things New Leagues at LawInSport’s Rugby Union and the Law Conference earlier this week. Some key takeaways: 🏉 investment is already here (notably CVC in the Northern Hemisphere and Silverlake in New Zealand Rugby Commercial) at Union, League and Club level. 🏉 expect more to follow as the proposed SARU deal resurfaces and with the door open for other Rugby Union rightsholders (more commercial investable arms?) 🏉 does Rugby Union need its own version of the King’s League? What about the rumoured ‘breakaway’ global club competition? Are these even possible within the regulatory and stakeholder landscape (think protected formats, player availability, calendar and early stakeholder buy in)? What else does a promoter need to think about (e.g. sanctions, participation agreements, new rules and regs, commercial deals)? 🏉 all eyes on the launch of new rugby union competitions like Six Nations Rugby and SANZAAR’s new Nations Cup (2026) and Women's Elite Rugby (2025). In time, will we see investment from investors, like dedicated Women’s Sport funds, invest into WER centrally, or for stakes in TeamCos? At Onside Law we are proud to work across men’s and women’s Rugby Union in this area, including recently on the proposed SARU deal, with Six Nations on its partnership with SANZAAR and with those collaborating on new competitions. A good discussion with the excellent Laura Scott following her interview with #WADA. As she explains a key element in the outcome for us was the strategy of cooperation rather than the traditional defence approach of “challenge everything”. In cases like these #ITIA, WADA and the player can be aligned. We all want to establish exactly what happened and apply a reasonable and fair sanction. That also means the process can be quicker, more efficient and less expensive. #tennis #JannikSinner
