Ethiopia faces recurring climate-induced disasters that impact millions. How can we transform crisis management into proactive risk reduction? This week, USAID officially launched the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Activity in Ethiopia, a crucial five-year project aimed at strengthening resilience across the country. The initiative kicked off in Arba Minch, Southern Ethiopia, marking an important step forward in disaster preparedness. We're part of the implementing consortium led by RTI International. Our role focuses on mainstreaming DRM into public financial management (PFM) practices at the regional level. This work is critical for ensuring consistent and preemptive allocation of DRM funding, supporting a shift from reactive emergency management to proactive risk management. We're leveraging our experience from the Building Resilience in Ethiopia project (2019-2024), applying our expertise in disaster risk management and resource mobilization to this initiative. Our team is working closely with national experts, organizations, and institutions to develop and implement effective DRM solutions. The USAID DRM Activity aims to: ➡️ Improve capacity for DRM planning and preparedness ➡️ Strengthen DRM coordination ➡️ Enhance resource mobilization and management ➡️ Enable actions that pre-empt crises and reduce the impact of shocks. Collaborating with RTI and our consortium partners, we're committed to contributing to the transformation of Ethiopia's DRM system. Our goal is to help build a more resilient future that protects lives and livelihoods. We'll be sharing updates on the project's progress and impact as we move forward. Our values aren't just words on a wall – they're the driving force behind everything we do. Today, we're shining a spotlight on one of our core values: "Having a Positive Impact." What makes this value special is that it was shaped by input from every member of our team, creating a collective vision that sits at the heart of our organisation. Yet, like all powerful ideas, it takes on unique meaning for each individual who embraces it. We asked three of our team members from different corners of the world to share what "Having a Positive Impact" means to them. Their stories showcase the diverse ways we're making a difference across the globe: From agricultural empowerment in India to health system reforms in Kazakhstan and energy policy in Uganda, our team is making a difference in over 100 countries across 14 global offices. It’s truly inspiring to see the diverse ways our colleagues interpret and bring to life our commitment to positive impact.

Is the communication aspect in development projects just another box to tick? Or could it be the key to unlocking greater impact?   Effective communication isn't just about producing outputs—it's about reaching the right people at the right time and driving real outcomes. A social media plan only works if that's where your stakeholders are. Sometimes, a face-to-face meeting will resonate more than any online post.   Success shouldn't be measured by the number of views, likes or followers but by meaningful changes in attitudes and behaviour. Equally, communication strategies must be flexible, adapting to changing contexts and evolving alongside policy and media landscapes.   Budgeting for communication should be an integral part of any project—adequate resources allow for more targeted efforts, like using authentic imagery or tailoring content to specific audiences, which can make all the difference in achieving long-term impact.   💡 Key insights from our latest blog: ✔️ Communication is not just about transmitting messages; it's about creating conditions for tangible change. ✔️ A flexible strategy ensures the right messages reach the right people at the right time. ✔️ Shifting focus from outputs to meaningful outcomes is crucial for real impact. ✔️ Strategic budgeting for communication is essential, not an afterthought.   Read our full blog post here: https://opm.global/3NhACnn

How to scale up private investment in adaptation and resilience The world is massively under-investing in adaptation which risks worsening poverty, conflict and a host of other global challenges: current investment is about one third of what is needed. With public resources about one third of need, expanding private investment in adaptation and resilience is crucial to mobilising additional resources to address the resilience challenge across the world.  The big question is how to make this happen. This was the topic of discussion last week with FCDO climate and private investment advisers. We presented findings from analysis of how donors can help address two major challenges: 1)     How to mainstream adaptation and resilience in financial decision making by international, national and local financial institutions, banks and businesses 2)     How to scale private investment into goods and services that increase adaptation and resilience, such as weather and climate services, climate smart agriculture and more. The findings were the product of work supported by FCDO, commissioned by Andrew Lucas and colleagues. The other (excellent) authors were Richard McNally, Edward Cameron, Durreshawar Mahmood, Rhea Cordeiro and Sanya Prakash. Our discussion at FCDO explored how donors can contribute to faster progress, particularly in low-income countries.  The discussion touched on issues to do with the availability and accessibility of data, incentives, regulation and how to maximise investment in the countries and communities that are the most vulnerable. Over the past ten years we have seen phenomenal growth in private investment in mitigation. We need a similar effort to strengthen the incentives, policy, regulation and markets for adaptation. Our report suggests some steps on this journey: give it a read (or at least the Executive Summary 😊).
