Air cargo is on the rise! According to a recent analysis by Xeneta, the industry experienced double-digit growth in demand for the second consecutive month in February, with a significant YoY increase of 11%. This is good news for the airlines, as volumes and rates continue to climb even after CNY. Generally, we wouldn’t expect to see a rate uptick at this time of year, However according to Sea Intelligence, ocean shipping schedule reliability has fallen to just 39.4% in January, the lowest since October 2022, The unseasonal uptick is likely due to the disruption in the Red Sea. Shippers have, therefore, been opting for sea-air or airfreight alternatives. As we know the Red Sea crisis is having a significant impact on global trade, particularly in China and HK, where ocean shipments are being converted to air. This shift is posing challenging on the supply side, leading to short-term embargoes on import traffic. Xeneta reported that demand growth outpaced global cargo supply for the fourth consecutive month, with a 5% YoY increase. Shippers are prioritizing financial deadlines and aiming to maximize shipments before the end of March, which could explain the demand increase. As we wait to see what happens next in the Red Sea, we can expect downward pressure on rates once summer belly capacity returns in the western hemisphere and China, where the travel recovery is still ongoing.  Optima Worldwide are working with our clients to offer them the best possible rates with service to match.
