Have you ever wondered why orangutans have reddish-brown hair? TimTom is particularly identifiable by her luscious locks! Though the answer is not fully known, the reddish-brown colour is thought to relate to the fact that orangutans are the only arboreal great Ape species. In the treetops, orangutans are hard to see. ORANGUTAN FOUNDATION
Non-profit Organizations
We have been working for over 30 years to provide a future for orangutans, forests and people.
About us
The Orangutan Foundation is a UK registered charity working to conserve the threatened orangutan and its globally important habitat, the tropical forests of Borneo and Sumatra. Since its foundation in 1990, the Orangutan Foundation has developed a diverse range of programmes. Key stakeholders who include local communities, grassroot NGO’s, local business and regional government are at the heart of the Foundation’s work. With their inclusion comes conservation success and sustainability. Being the first organisation in the UK to raise awareness about the plight of the species, the Orangutan Foundation continues to actively engage the public, worldwide media, corporate and governmental organisations.

The pangolin is an arboreal mammal that has been around for 80 million years. It is the only mammal with scales, which serve as defensive armour. It is unfortunately hunted for these scales and its meat and is considered the most illegally traded mammal in the world. Help us protect critical tropical rainforest habitat today by donating through the link in our bio. #pangolin #conservation

Night surveys at the Pondok Ambung Research Station (PARS), in partnership with Tanjung Putting National Park Agency, are full of surprises. Researchers never know what species the tropical rainforest will reveal. In this case, a tree frog, leaf insect, and stick insect were 3 species spotted. Which is your favourite? We just 🧡 this video of Timtom! We support her care as she is gradually prepared for a life in the wild by Orangutan Foundation. The main mode of transport for Timtom to reach new areas of forest is by canoe - and she's become very comfortable with her canoe rides across the river! She spends her days foraging in the trees, and also enjoys splashing in the river water. And she is getting increasingly ready for an independent life in the wild! You can help by adopting her 👇 https://lnkd.in/eZXyjmiG

Orangutans originally became known as ‘gardeners of the forest’ due to their facilitation of seed dispersal in tropical rainforests. Orangutans eat the fruit of the rainforest, digesting all but its seeds. The seeds are then secreted around the forest. New plants sprout from the seeds, aiding plant reproduction. Let’s not forget, orangutans aren’t the only species to do so! #orangutans #seeddispersal #gardenersoftheforest #rainforest

Sheila, 25 years old, was reintroduced into Lamandau Wildlife Reserve in 2004. Sadly, Sheila's first offspring passed away as an infant, but she has continued to raise three healthy individuals since then. Silva, 3, is the most recent offspring (pictured together in second photo). Silva will be completely dependent on his mother for another year and stay by her side till around the age of 7-8. Your support helps mothers like Sheila reproduce in a protected environment. #orangutan #orangutan_foundation #orangutaninfant #conservation #tropicalrainforest #animalprotection

"To use the world well, to be able to stop wasting it and our time in it, we need to re-learn our being in it." - Ursula Le Guin One of the joys of the undergrowth of a tropical rainforest is the variety of fungi🍄. Not only are they wonderful to look at, we now know the importance of fungi for life on Earth. Photos: Dr Mark Fellowes

Did you know, the bond between an orangutan mother and her infant is one of the closest of any species? Lego will be completely dependent on his mother Labetty for the first four years of his life. After around 7-8 years, Labetty is likely to reproduce again. Other than humans, this is the longest interbirth interval seen in primates. Supporters help us create safe habitats for these dedicated orangutan mothers to protect and nurture their offspring.

With Orangutan Caring Week upcoming in November, we're looking back at last year's activities. Community outreach is a crucial part of our work. For OCW 2023, in collaboration with BKSDA and Tanjung Puting National Park, we invited local schools to learn about rainforest biodiversity and conservation. The highlight was a camping trip involving 16 senior high school students. Participants visited Camp Siswoyo and learnt about rainforest biodiversity and conservation, and reforestation. Here they are planting their very own saplings. This was particularly special because though local, many had not yet ventured into the rainforest. Your support helps us continue our community outreach!
