This week's Director's View from John Deans... "Why do we get into so much more of a muddle about universal numeracy than we do with literacy for all? We don't see teaching and assessing literacy skills as putting a cap on some children's ambition – but we seem always alive to the danger that a focus on numeracy skills might be a choice to limit rather than empower. We feature two related stories in this week's Education Insights newsletter: on the anxiety gap identified between disadvantaged children and others, and plans to assess secondary students' maths skills for adult life. A shared theme is that all students, whatever their background and their ability, might be getting less real-life maths than they want – and need." Wonderful to see this new book out this week! Liz Cremona-Howard and the team loved working on this with Jonny and the team at Oxford University Press.

NEW BOOK OUT THIS WEEK: Beside the Banyan Tree It's lovely to see this beautifully-illustrated book out this week. I am so very grateful to the talented Samya Zitouni whose artwork is so great in this one. The story is set on a little school trip, in which the class are creating poems and song lyrics. The tale focuses on a girl who looks up into the branches of a high tree, and declares her shock at seeing such enormous fruits hanging from it. They are not fruits at all... they are giant bats! The story follows two children who feel a little out-of-place in the class, but each uses their strengths to support the other's challenges. If the story of somebody confusing fruit for bats is familiar to friends and colleagues at Shiv Nadar School Chennai, it's because this conversation happened for real, but the confused child misidentifying a bat was actually an embarrassed me, talking to Soniya Mawani during my first visit in February 2023, if my memory serves me right!? An in February this year, I loved being able to take the lively G3-4 students from SNS Chennai on a little trip out into the resplendent gardens of the Theosophical Society in Adyar, and it has been so nostalgic to draw on some real life experiences into this little early reading book. I am thoroughly obsessed with that Banyan tree, and could happily spend a lifetime telling stories beside it.
