Stats vary, but approximately 41% of TikTok’s 800 million users are between the ages of 16 and 24. A recent BBC News article, “French families sue TikTok over harmful content,” draws attention to the significant impact social media can have on mental health - especially in vulnerable young people who are still shaping their relationship with food and body image. Many of these users are exposed to content that can unintentionally glamorise restrictive eating, excessive exercise, or other disordered behaviours. We also know that harmful content, such as pro-anorexia material, often exploits gaps in content regulation. Algorithms can quickly learn to serve damaging material - even when users aren’t actively searching for it. While social media platforms have made efforts to reduce this risk, the immediacy of highly targeted content can still put young people at risk. Importantly, social media is not the sole cause of eating disorders. These are complex mental health conditions often with roots in genetics, environmental, and personal experiences. However, we believe it’s essential to hold platforms accountable and to encourage mindful engagement with content. As a society, we must remain vigilant in fostering safe online environments and empower individuals to recognise when content negatively affects their mental health. #EatingDisorders #MentalHealthAwareness #SocialMedia #TikTok #Orri

We commend Gary Barlow for openly sharing his personal journey with bulimia. His honesty brings much-needed awareness to the complexities of living with an eating disorder and helps 'normalise' an experience that is often shrouded in silence and misunderstanding. Eating disorders are not simply about food or control - they speak to deep emotional layers that affect everyday life. As Gary points out, managing a difficult relationship with food is uniquely challenging because food itself is essential: “If you have a smoking addiction, you just don’t smoke. But with food, you’ve got to eat anyway, so you’ve got to work it out.” This difference reminds us of the ongoing nature of recovery from eating disorders. Unlike other addictions, healing requires developing a balanced relationship with something that remains a daily part of life. At Orri, we provide specialist support for this unique journey, helping clients find ways to nourish both body and mind. Thank you, Gary, for helping bring greater awareness and empathy to this important issue. #EatingDisorders #MentalHealthAwareness #GaryBarlow #FoodStruggles #Orri #Recovery #Support

For many living with an eating disorder, every day can feel like wearing a mask - hiding pain, struggle, and fear behind a facade of 'I’m fine.' But beneath the mask, there’s a person deserving of care, compassion, and support. Removing it can feel terrifying, but it’s the first step toward healing. At Orri, we believe recovery begins when we start to take off the mask and let ourselves be seen for who we truly are - beyond the eating disorder. Wishing you all a Happy Halloween. 🎃 #Halloween #EDrecovery #RecoveryIsPossible

The release of Beat's report, There’s No Place Like Home, represents a pivotal moment in setting a new standard for eating disorder care in the UK. This landmark report highlights the critical role that intensive community and day treatment can play in supporting individuals and families, offering a sustainable, empowering alternative to traditional inpatient care. For Orri, Beat’s endorsement is both humbling and encouraging. Since 2019, Orri has been pioneering day treatment that provides structured, compassionate care within the community, helping clients remain connected to family and support networks essential for long-term recovery. Our approach aligns with Beat’s vision, filling a critical gap between outpatient and inpatient services to provide the intensive, personalised support needed at every stage of the journey. Day treatment has proven to be a life-saving, cost-effective alternative, particularly amid the UK's rising rates of eating disorders. Hospital admissions have surged by 84% in recent years, especially impacting teenage girls, who have seen a 42% increase in cases since the pandemic. Early intervention within the community can prevent hospitalisation and allow people to reclaim their lives in a setting that honours and respects their unique needs and personal journeys. Orri’s data reinforces this, with 38% of clients avoiding hospitalisation due to structured day treatment programmes. With a 76% recovery rate (compared to 46% across the sector), our model demonstrates that change is possible when the individual - not just the disorder - is at the heart of treatment. As we celebrate Beat’s leadership in advocating for effective, community-based treatment, we look forward to a future where recovery is accessible, compassionate, and tailored to the needs of each individual and their loved ones. Together, we are working toward a system that truly champions Recovery For All. #EatingDisorderRecovery #RecoveryIsPossible #DayTreatment #Community #Beat #EatingDisorderAwareness #Therapy

The tragic story of Jennifer Michelle Matters serves as a poignant reminder of the pervasive impact of diet culture and the critical need for informed care in medical settings. Jennifer's experience highlights how seemingly innocuous questions can perpetuate harmful narratives around eating disorders. Eating disorders thrive in an environment that idolises thinness, often leading to dangerous misconceptions about those struggling with these conditions. It is imperative that all healthcare professionals receive specialised training to recognise and respond appropriately to the complexities of eating disorders. At Orri, we advocate for compassionate, informed, and highly-specialised care. By challenging myths and stigma, and addressing the nuances of eating disorders, we can create an environment where recovery becomes possible for all. #eatingdisorderawareness #eatingdisorders #recovery #recoveryispossible

While the wellness industry promotes a focus on health, it can sometimes fuel unhealthy relationships with food and body image - particularly for those vulnerable to eating disorders. A recent article from Psychology Today sheds light on key risks: 🙅♀️ Restrictive diets often label food as “good” or “bad,” reinforcing harmful behaviours around food choices 📢 Moralising food choices can foster feelings of guilt and shame, leading to low self-esteem 🥒 Conflating thinness with “health” can drive body dissatisfaction, fuelling unhealthy dieting practices 🧪 Misleading claims and recommendations not backed by science can do more harm than good At Orri, we recognise the complexity of eating disorders and how external pressures - from wellness trends to societal standards - can impact recovery. It’s crucial to approach 'wellness' with balance and critical thinking, ensuring that health is about nourishment, not restriction. Let’s support evidence-based approaches to wellness and champion body acceptance for all. #EatingDisorders #WellnessIndustry #MentalHealth #Recovery #BodyImage #FoodFreedom #EDRecovery
