Yesterday the Food Standards Agency published the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme Audit of Display and Business Survey: 2023. The report provides the results of a covert audit of food businesses in England, Northern Ireland and Wales, and provides an estimate of the display of food hygiene rating stickers at physical premises and online.
It also explores businesses’ attitudes toward the scheme and their reasons for display or non-display.
One of the key takeaways is the gulf between those that display their rating at their physical premises and those that display their rating online.
In England, where display is not mandatory at a physical premises, 69% display in-person. However, only 10% of food businesses with an online platform display their food hygiene rating prominently on their social media or website. In Northern Ireland and Wales, it is mandatory to display your hygiene rating at your physical premises. 92% display in-person in Wales and 91% do so in Northern Ireland. However, only 8% of food businesses in Wales display online, and only 5% do so in Northern Ireland.
Most businesses agree that using a digital platform should be no different from ordering from a physical premises, especially considering the growing importance of customers’ online experience.
This guide will help businesses either download their sticker as an image for social media or as something to be embedded into their website that will change automatically as your rating does.
