A big thank you to Action against Medical Accidents (AvMA) for hosting yet another insightful conference in Bournemouth this week. The welcome drinks were, again, a brilliant opportunity to catch up with friends before the serious business of learning over two days of lectures. On the second day, barrister Ben Bradley gave a talk on ‘Double or Quits’ – Tactical Decisions in Oncology Cases covering difficult tactical issues which frequently arise in the presentation of oncology cases. Outer Temple's Eliot Woolf KC, Ian Denham, Robert Dickason, Paul Barton, Harry Gamble and Victoria Bunn also attended the conference and we were so pleased to see so many guests at the Outer Temple Chambers' exhibitor stand. We were also delighted to have our friends from Clarke Willmott join our table at the mid-conference dinner. James Edmondson, Kerry Fifield, Isabel Harper,Vanessa Harris, Marguarita Tyne It was great catching up with colleagues and friends, and we hope to see you all soon again. #AvMA #ClinicalNegligence #AnnualConference

Head of Outer Temple’s Sports Law team, Louis Weston has been published in the Sports Integrity chapter of the LawInSport Annual Review 2024/25 on betting and financial corruption. The chapter gives a comprehensive summary of events, linking the key issues and developments of the past year. Louis Weston reviewed the topic of betting and financial corruption. One quarter of the way through the first century of this millennium and, no surprise, corrupters and the corrupt have not stopped trying to make illicit money from sport. The motives of money laundering, greed and envy drive the corrupt. The to and fro, the cat and mouse of the regulators, the state and the miscreants carried on globally with little sign that those who cheat were to recognise the errors of their ways and simply play fair and straight. Who though would think it would? It is a false expectation that humans might behave with humanity and integrity when at the international level nations still war against nations, and the great invention of the 21st Century, AI, is being put to use to create fake videos, news and images; the human condition is to tread from the path of the good. This review identifies some of the bigger cases and actions being taken, hoping to see in the light of the flickering candle of righteous endeavour that corruption, match-fixing and manipulation are being made harder, and punished when uncovered. This article was published on Tuesday 18 March 2025. To read the full article, click here: https://lnkd.in/eaXSzEat #LawInSport #SportsLaw #LitigationInSport #Betting #Corruption #AI

The Employment Tribunal handed down judgment in the case of Mr S Kalar v The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, dismissing all claims brought against the Metropolitan Police. Outer Temple's Martina Murphy acted for the successful Respondent. Mr S Kalar had been employed as a police officer by the Metropolitan Police from 1993 until he retired in 2023. Mr Kalar brought wide-ranging discrimination claims under the Equality Act 2010 in relation to both race and disability and whistleblowing claims under the Employment Rights Act 1996 comprising over 270 individual allegations. The Claimant referred to an “an overarching culture of institutional racism, misogyny and disablism” with allegations spanning several years. The case also involved procedural issues concerning grievance handling, medical accommodations due to his disabilities, and workplace adjustments. The tribunal heard extensive evidence over a 24-day hearing before reaching a reserved decision. The tribunal ultimately dismissed all of Mr Kalar’s allegations. Martina was instructed by Alessandra Gettins, Emma Rowley and Danielle Wigmore of Capsticks LLP on behalf of The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis. Barrister James Counsell KC recently acted on behalf of the Solicitors Regulatory Authority, successfully prosecuting Simpson Thacher & Bartlett for failing to have anti-money laundering (AML) risk assessments and procedures in place in its London office. A fine of £300,000 was issued by the regulatory body. The SRA identified various issues during a routine review of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in 2021 and referred the matter to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) in November 2023, instructing James Counsell KC to act on its behalf. Simpson Thacher admitted its failure to comply with AML regulations between June 2017 and 2023. The firm was compliant by the time the SRA referred it in November 2023. At the hearing on 12th March 2025, the SDT approved a fine, agreed between the parties, of £300,000. James also secured £62,000 towards the SRA’s legal costs from Simpson Thacher.
