“Research is showing us that our mindsets result from the interplay of feeling, thinking and seeing – creating instances of knowing, doubt or uncertainty. This opens new possibilities for us taking more control over our lives and gaining greater psychological freedom in the face of uncertainty. This is not just about understanding an idea and adopting positive thinking. Building a mindset modifies and grows the networks and structures in your brain, and changes the hormones and neurotransmitters you produce. In turn, these impact on your immediate and long-term health, how open you are to new information, the decisions you make, how others see you, and the nature of the relationships you form. YOUR MINDSET, FOR BETTER OR WORSE, DEFINES YOUR LIFE.” (extract from Jean Gomes’ book ‘Leading in a Non-Linear World’)

🤖 What are humans for in an automating world? 🤖 Author of 'The Atomic Human' Neil Lawrence joined The Evolving Leader Podcast this week to discuss what it truly means to be human. When we strip away everything AI can do for us, we’re left with the raw, untapped essence of humanity that we need to understand and amplify to make the world better—not worse. Listen to this important and timely conversation today, wherever you get your podcasts. #podcast #weareoutside #morehuman
🔥 OUT NOW - S7 Ep13 The Atomic Human with Neil Lawrence 🔥 What are humans for in an automating world? What constitutes a good life when robots permeate every aspect of your work, home, even nature? These are questions of huge significance today and they can be approached at many levels, societal, economic and philosophical. In this episode of The Evolving Leader podcast, co-hosts Jean Gomes and Scott Allender talk to Neil Lawrence. Neil has been both an academic AI pioneer at the University of Cambridge and a commercial leader heading up Amazon's AI efforts. In his recent book 'Atomic Human', Neil writes that when you strip away everything that machine intelligence can automate, you are left with the core of humanity that we need to better understand and amplify so that our world gets better, not worse. So tune in to a fascinating and important conversation on The Evolving Leader. "One of the biggest shifts for leaders is to stop seeing Value Today and Tomorrow as competing forces and instead create a symbiosis between them." In Jean Gomes' recent #MindsetMonthly blog post, he explores the Future-Now Organization, and the changes necessary to foster sustainable growth. The challenge? Shifting away from the comfort zone of focusing 95% on today’s results to embracing the 70-30 model: 70% on delivering value today, 30% on investing in tomorrow’s growth. The real question is: Are you ready to balance both short-term goals and long-term vision? Are you ready to break the cycle of short-termism? Start thinking both/and, not either/or. #Leadership #Strategy #Growth #Innovation #FutureNow #humanevolution

Unlocking the Power of an Open Mindset through Curiosity Last year, Dr. Emily Clements, Emily Lowe and Sara Deschamps came together to discuss and experiment with the concept of Curiosity - asking the question: can curiosity be built? And if so, what could heightened curiosity unlock? As children, we ask hundreds of questions a day. But as adults, we ask far fewer. Why? Over time, we become experts, and with expertise comes comfort—and, often, stagnation. The risk? A world that’s constantly changing and uncertain may leave us behind if we become too comfortable in the "known." The more we age, the more we tend to stop asking questions and exploring the unfamiliar. This "habituated mindset"—comfortable with the status quo and resistant to change—can curb personal growth, stifle innovation, and dampen engagement at work. The bottom line: more curiosity = more innovation. More resilience. More opportunities. Watch the full interview here: https://buff.ly/3PKdtva #CuriosityLab #Resilience #Innovation #MindsetIndex

How is climate change not only affecting our environment but also reshaping our minds, bodies, and sense of well-being? There is a disconnect between our awareness of climate change and the profound, ongoing impact it has on our mental and physical well-being. While much attention has been focused on the environmental and economic consequences of climate change, we are overlooking how it is already altering our minds, bodies, and overall sense of security. The problem is not just the environmental destruction, but how the increasing instability of the world around us—through rising temperatures, natural disasters, and the breakdown of familiar patterns—affects our psychological and physiological responses, such as heightened stress, anxiety, cognitive impairment, and even increased violence. In Jean Gomes's recent #MindsetMonthly article, he discusses the gap between reality and our current mindset—a gap that leads to denial, passivity, and disengagement. In 2020, The Evolving Leader Podcast had the privilege of hosting neuroscientist Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett. Dr. Feldman Barrett challenges traditional views of emotions as hardwired responses, offering fresh insights that impact everything from emotional intelligence to AI-driven facial recognition. Catch the extended conversation below, and dive deeper into her work through her books 'How Emotions Are Made' and 'Seven and a Half Lessons About the Brain.' #podcast #humanevolution #emotions
🔥 REPLAY: How Emotions Are Made with Dr Lisa Feldman Barrett 🔥 Back in 2020, we released a two-part conversation (S1 Ep15 and 16) with neuroscientist Dr Lisa Feldman Barrett. We’re long-time admirers of Lisa’s work and were thrilled that she agreed to join co-hosts Jean Gomes and Scott Allender to discuss her work on The Evolving Leader podcast. It’s also clear that Lisa Feldman Barrett’s work is a big hit with our listeners as four years after release these two episodes continue to sit at the top of our listener chart, so here we’ve decided to pull them together into a special extended episode (links to the episode are below). Lisa Feldman Barrett is profoundly changing our understanding of the brain and in particular, our emotions. Since the ancient philosophers, and into our last century of scientific endeavour, emotions have been seen as hard-wired responses to external stimuli, located in specific regions of the brain. Lisa’s work has over-turned this age-old model which shapes everything from our current beliefs about emotional intelligence to facial recognition software widely being deployed around the world. Beyond this extended conversation, you’ll find more of Lisa Feldman Barrett’s work in her two books, Seven and a Half Lessons About the Brain (2020) and How Emotions are Made (2017), as well as hundreds of peer reviewed scientific papers appearing in Science, Nature Neuroscience and other top journals in psychology and cognitive neuroscience.
