Our APAC Singapore office hosted a joint FiscalNote roundtable featuring Oxford Analytica, Dragonfly (part of FiscalNote), and FrontierView (part of FiscalNote), discussing the impact of the US elections on APAC. Led by our fantastic panelist lineup: Nicholas Redman, Richard Henderson, Adam Jarczyk, Barbara Kelemen and Chris Humphrey. The atmosphere was charged with surprise at Trump's victory and the need to plan for the incoming administration's more aggressive stance towards Asia Pacific. The discussions during the event highlighted key concerns such as Sino-American relations, trade tariffs, supply chain challenges, currency volatility, and the overall balance of power in the region. If you have any further questions or would like to delve deeper into any of these topics, please feel free to reach out to either Sarah Gkonos or Gracious Steven. #APAC #USelection

African debt levels may stabilise. Recent IMF reporting suggests a modestly improved African economic outlook. Impacts: ➡ High debt-service burdens will limit funds available for improving livelihoods and boosting growth. ➡ Almost half of African countries suffer from serious macroeconomic imbalances and may be forced to make heavy spending cuts. ➡ Drought-affected countries will see slower growth due to lower agricultural production and reduced hydroelectricity output. ➡ Continued rises in food prices may lead to unrest in some countries. Latin America’s lithium hopes may prove exaggerated. Accounting for a large share of known reserves, much of the region is hoping for an economic boost from lithium demand. Impacts: 👉 China will remain a key player in the sector, raising concerns over Latin America’s China dependency and causing frictions with Washington. 👉 In Peru, risks to lithium projects due to local hostilities will be exacerbated by ongoing political instability and governability issues. 👉 Development delays could encourage a longer-term downturn in demand if electric vehicle technologies develop in other directions. Although the United States currently dominates the data center market thanks to its tax breaks, minimal data localisation laws and renewable energy credits, its position will likely be challenged by emerging markets, particularly in Asia Pacific. Impacts: ➡ As emerging economies relax data localisation rules, they will continue to attract ‘big tech’ investments. ➡ The growing middle class in emerging markets will drive demand for hyperscale cloud services domestically. ➡ The US data center industry will face challenges from environmental groups over its negative impact on water resources. ➡ Access to renewable energy will help advanced economies retain their leadership in the global data center market. The first round of the Moldovan presidential election and the referendum on EU integration were close-run affairs. President Maia Sandu will face independent candidate Alexandr Stoianoglo in a presidential run-off on November 3, two weeks after Sandu’s referendum to promote EU accession passed by the narrowest of margins. What next: ➡ Stoianoglo seems better placed than Sandu to pick up the votes of citizens who backed other candidates on October 20. ➡ The razor-thin margin of victory in the referendum exposed the government’s limitations in preventing or limiting Moscow’s influence on the vote. ➡ This deficiency is unlikely to be fixed before the election, making the Russian factor a strong and unpredictable variable that will influence the run-off.
