The coming stall in U.S. climate policy at the federal level is a major setback, that brings to mind when Mr Trump ripped the U.S. out of the recently ratified #ParisAgreement in 2016.
However, over the past eight years the decentralisation of U.S. climate policy has deepened, states, cities and companies are better positioned to resist and carry on than they were in 2016. Our #NetZeroStocktake shows that:
🎯 In 2016, not a single US state had a #netzero target. In 2024, 19 of them do.
👩⚖️ 12 of those targets are enshrined in law.
⌛ 5 x U.S. States have set net zero targets with earlier target years than the federal government’s 2050 target, i.e. #California, #Hawaii, #Maine, #Maryland, #NorthDakota & #Virginia).
🌆 32 x major U.S. cities, such as #Phoenix have set net zero targets in either law or policy.
Our #COP29 side event at COP29, co-hosted with the #Under2Coalition (Climate Group) will discuss the implications for global climate policy from the U.S. election and the critical role for subnational entities — from states like #Washington to cities like Phoenix, #Arizona — to continue to drive climate action, and seize the economic opportunity of the C21st century.
Speaking at the event are:
- Catherine McKenna, Chair, UN High-level Expert Group on Net Zero.
- Professor Thomas Hale, Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford
- Nehmat Kaur, Director - Under2 & Subnational Governments, Climate Group
- Takeshi Kuramochi, Senior climate policy researcher, NewClimate Institute
- Karin Svensson, Chief Sustainability Officer, Volvo Group
Also, the event, will launch:
- The #ClimatePolicyMonitor, a new tool from the University of Oxford's #NetZeroRegulationHub, showing how effectively net zero regulation is closing the 'implementation gap.'
- Data-Driven EnviroLab's 'City Climate Action Report Card', assessing the integrity of 12 key cities' climate commitments, against the #HLEG guidelines.
