    A strand of Paperclip’s information commitment is to update clients, prospects and general readers on telecommunication technology and terminology. An example of this is the growing popularity of dumbphones, also known as ‘feature phones’ or ‘basic phones’. Dumbphones are typically flip phones with a mono or simple colour screen, and a physical push-button keypad. They limit the user experience to basic functions such as calls, texts and alarms. Consequently, ‘feature phone’ is a misnomer, as a key characteristic of dumbphones is the absence of many of the features one would typically find on a smartphone: internet connectivity, apps etc. Although still accounting for a small proportion of mobile phone sales/ownership, dumbphones are popular with several distinct demographics. These demographics include Gen Zs and Millennials wanting to escape the pressure of 24/7 connectivity; parents wanting to keep children away from smartphones; ‘seniors’ who struggle with smartphone technology; those working in environments where a smartphone could easily be damaged, such as construction sites, farms and manufacturing plants; people concerned about cyber-security and, in particular, the fear of having financial information on a smartphone. It should also be mentioned that dumbphones are considerably cheaper than smartphones and, in some cases, a battery charge can last a whole month! There are ways in which you can turn your smartphone into a dumbphone using apps such as Unpluq, minimalist phone and DistractaGone. If trying to reduce your obsession with TikTok, YouTube and Instagram is a key driver for switching to a dumbphone, there are timed lock boxes available for smartphones that can help you control your craving! #mobilephones #paperclip #callanswering #adminsupport

    159 is a new 24/7 helpline should you receive an unexpected phone call about a financial matter claiming to be from your bank. If you do receive such a call, the advice is: stop, hang up, call 159. If you call 159 you will be put through to your bank. You are twice as likely to be victim of scamming than any other crime.     The publicity surrounding World Mental Health Day prompted me to ask the Paperclip team about how they looked after their own mental health away from the Paperclip Communications Centre. What struck me most from the answers is just how much we value, and take value from, the simple things life like talking with friends and family, and time in the open air, often with a dog by our side! Here are just some of the comments: 'I like to get outside in the fresh air. The hardest part is simply putting your shoes on!' 'I value a cuppa, a slice of cake, and a natter with friends.' 'I love to go for walks with my dog, exploring a little and finding new routes.' 'I like to chat with my family.' 'Watching Disney.' One team member who shall remain nameless said that she 'put the music on' and performed (yes you read that correctly!) for an hour or more. Whilst this does great things for her own mental health, one can only wonder at the impact on those around her! At a more structured and organisational level, Paperclip subscribes to an EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) which provides Paperclip team members with confidential mental health counselling. The EAP counselling also covers many of the factors that could potentially contribute to poor mental health such as bereavement, stress, anxiety, family, health, substance abuse, financial concerns, and domestic abuse. To end on a positive note, here are a couple of my favourite quotes linked to World Mental Health Day: 'Take a deep breath. It's just a bad day, not a bad life.'     I was motivated to train as an MHFA England® Mental Health First Aider when a family member experienced a period of poor mental health brought on by stress at work. This brought home to me that even the most laid back, outwardly content and experienced people can struggle with their mental health. I would recommend the two-day face-to-face MHFA training course to anyone with an interest in learning more about mental health, and a desire to understand and look after their own mental health and help others. Here are just three of the key learning points I took away from my training: Frame of Reference – we are all unique and make sense of the world in our own unique personal way. The training included a session where all delegates talked about their own individual frames of reference. Exceptionally powerful to hear and understand how others view the world in which we all live: particularly for a relatively privileged white, heterosexual male. ALGEE – Not the most memorable acronym, but very important. ALGEE is the action plan for an MHFA to help a person developing poor mental health. ALGEE stands for: -      Approach the person, assess and assist with any crisis -      Listen and communicate non-judgementally -      Give support and information -      Encourage the person to get appropriate professional help -      Encourage other supports ALGEE is not a rigid framework. We were encouraged as MHFAs to be flexible and to respond to each individual and each situation using our own judgement. The importance of language – I work in marketing and so I am probably more aware than most of the power and impact of words. However, the MHFA training really brought home to me how language has the potential to stigmatise mental health. This was particularly true when we discussed suicide, where standard phrases – e.g. commit suicide, successful suicide attempt – are used without thought of their potential impact. MHFA training talks about ‘suicide thoughts’ (fairly common) and ‘suicide behaviour’ (much rarer). This comment from the MHFA training workbook stuck with me; ‘You are far more likely to meet someone who is having suicide thoughts than to come across someone who is having a heart attack’. Yet, many people will have done basic CPR training or understand what is needed from TV programmes or social media. I really gained a lot from my MHFA training. A huge thanks to Mike Lawrence for his teaching and guidance, and to my fellow delegates for their candour and support. #mentalhealthawareness #paperclip #mentalhealthatwork

    Sadly, fraud is big business and young people are particularly vulnerable. Prevention is clearly the best step to take, but in the event you or your child are the victim of fraud the Action Fraud hotline is worth noting. Action Fraud does not have investigation powers itself, but the reports it records are passed to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau. It’s the start of a new University year, and Action Fraud is warning students to be alert to five particular types of fraudulent activity which specifically targets them. 1 – Investment fraud – be wary of online messages relating to, for example, cryptocurrency which promise a high and quick return. If it sounds to good to be true, it probably isn’t! 2 – Fake job fraud – many students look for jobs to help them through the year. Be cautious of organisations asking for upfront payments for consultations and advice. 3 – Rental fraud – where possible, go through university approved housing channels and make sure contracts are in place before money changes hands. 4 – Online shopping – this is a warning for all of us, not just students! 5 – Ticke fraud – who doesn’t want a ticket to the hottest events in town?! Always try and obtain tickets through official channels. Fraud can be devastating.
