How are you supporting Jewish and Muslim employees at work? Today, we launch our latest research, exploring how the Israel-Gaza conflict has impacted Muslim and Jewish employees. The new 'Antisemitism and Islamophobia At Work (2024)' report found that 47% of Jewish and 36% of Muslim employees believe that discrimination against them has increased since October 7th 2023. Furthermore, 80% of Jews and 69% of Muslims report experiencing high levels of microaggressions at work. A key takeaway of the report is that employees of both faiths feel the emotional impact of the Israel-Gaza conflict, including the effects of social media misinformation and public protests - with accommodations and support provided by employers varying across individual experiences. October 1st marks Pearn Kandola's 40th Anniversary, and we're proud to mark the occasion today simply by continuing our mission to make the world fairer, launching this vital new report from our co-founder, Professor Binna Kandola OBE. Professor Kandola concludes the research with ten key recommendations to help organisations support employees to feel included, supported and safe during difficult times. Avoiding disability discrimination in the workplace. Our Disability At Work (2022) research showed that two in five disabled employees are not receiving the reasonable adjustments they need in the workplace, despite the fact that disability is a protected characteristic. This research was something that our Founder Binna Kandola, recently discussed with law firm Shoosmiths. The conversation forms part of an important article that defines what disability discrimination is, whilst exploring the common issues that arise and what employers can do to avoid discrimination claims. Addressing disability discrimination in the workplace is an important legal obligation, but by nurturing an inclusive environment, employers will also develop the full potential of all employees, leading to a more diverse and productive workforce. Navigating Religion in the Workplace: What Does the Law Say? Creating workplaces where everyone feels respected and included, regardless of their religion or beliefs, is crucial for fostering an inclusive environment. In the eyes of the law, religion is also a protected characteristic, and so to discriminate someone at work based on their religion or belief, is legally prohibited. In his recent article, Professor Binna Kandola discusses the legal aspects and best practices for managing religious diversity at work with Amy Leech and Simon Fennell, employment experts from law firm Shoosmiths. The article highlights why it’s crucial for all businesses to understand the legal protections for religious expression in the workplace, and not only to ensure compliance, By implementing inclusive practices around religion and belief, businesses will help create respectful, safe and productive environments for employees to thrive. You can read the full article at https://lnkd.in/e27Gen6m For a deeper dive into religion at work, we have our recent research on Antisemitism and Islamophobia in the Workplace, as well as the Religion at Work Report 2023: https://lnkd.in/eX7ZPVzU #ReligiousDiscrimination #Antisemitism #Islamophobia #Inclusion #DEI

Oscar-winning director Asif Kapadia’s recent apology for retweeting antisemitic content highlights a deeper issue about how actions intended to critique governments can unintentionally rely on harmful stereotypes, affecting entire communities. In this case, his retweets, which he admitted were shared without careful consideration, employed language and imagery that perpetuated age-old antisemitic tropes. These actions reveal a broader societal problem: a lack of empathy and awareness, regardless of intent, of how such content affects Jewish people. A lack of empathy is not uncommon. People often share political content without fully understanding the context behind certain stereotypes. But conflating criticisms of Israeli policies with antisemitic rhetoric is dangerous, and many fail to recognise how it reinforces negative perceptions of Jewish communities. Pearn Kandola LLP’s recent research into antisemitism and Islamophobia at work offers critical insights into how such actions impact Jewish individuals, particularly in professional settings. We found that antisemitism in the workplace is often, but not always, subtle, manifesting through comments or the unchallenged perpetuation of stereotypes. But this atmosphere of casual discrimination makes many Jewish employees feel so isolated, marginalised and even unsafe that they actually choose to hide their faith. Only half of our Jewish participants (55%) told us they would be comfortable sharing their religion with a new colleague. As a result of concealing their identity, we heard that many felt a reduced sense of belonging, significantly affecting not only their mental and emotional well-being but also their productivity and engagement at work. Whether intentional or not, Kapadia’s retweeting of antisemitic content contributes to this harmful cycle. By failing to consider the impact of stereotypical tropes, he (like many others) shows a disregard for the lived experiences of Jewish communities, reinforcing a climate of hostility and exclusion that makes Jewish people feel unsafe. We must understand how our actions shape social attitudes. This is where empathy becomes essential. Pearn Kandola’s research emphasises the importance of challenging bias and prejudice, even when it’s wrapped in political critique, and of fostering environments in which all employees feel safe and accepted. Kapadia’s apology is welcome. But the conversation must continue, with a focus on education and awareness, to ensure that all communities feel respected and understood. For more information on supporting colleagues affected by antisemitism and Islamophobia, our full report is available to download for free via the Pearn Kandola website. https://lnkd.in/eS9FrKzP #ReligionAtWork #ReligiousInclusion #Antisemitism
