It’s fantastic to see Lisa, our Learning & Development Lead, and Nick, our Executive Head Chef, making an impact by sharing their expertise with students at Truro and Penwith College! From inspiring career advice to practical insights on thriving in hospitality, we’re proud to support the next generation of professionals. 👏

It was a pleasure to welcome Cornwall Hotel Collection's Lisa E., Learning & Development Lead, and nick hodges, Executive Head Chef, to speak with our students about exciting career opportunities in the hospitality industry! 🌟 Nick and Lisa delivered down-to-earth advice on what it takes to succeed in high-end cheffing and hospitality. Their visit was particularly inspiring for some students who are currently applying for roles at Cornwall Hotel Collection. 👨🍳👩🍳 They also shared their insights on the crucial role maths plays in areas like costing, wastage, and profit margins. Nick emphasised the importance of versatility in the kitchen, saying, "You don't have to decide straight away where you want to specialise. Gaining experience in different areas of the kitchen is invaluable." 🍽️ Lisa, who started a management apprenticeship last year, encouraged students to think big, adding, "Don't think small. Be the best you can be and aspire to grow. Business admin and marketing are key skills to being successful." 🏆 Her story proves that it’s never too late to retrain and develop your skills in this dynamic industry – keep learning and honing those transferable skills! ✨ This visit was part of our 'Welcome to Hospitality at Truro and Penwith College' initiative, where local employers come in to offer career advice and help us shape our curriculum to meet industry demands. Tony Duce, Deputy Team Leader, commented, "We welcome local hospitality businesses to meet our students, share career advice, and ensure our curriculum aligns with industry requirements." Thank you, Lisa and Nick, for an inspiring session! 🌟 If you're a local business or employer and believe you could offer something valuable to the future workforce, we'd love to hear from you! 🤝 Check out our Partnership Pledge and see how you can get involved in shaping the next generation of professionals 👉 https://lnkd.in/eYSJW42x #HospitalityCareers #InspiringTheFuture #AnEmployerInEveryClassroom #WelcometoHospitality #truroandpenwith #spiresrestaurant

We couldn't be happier to host work experience placements every year and it is always nerve racking for the students during the first few days and this students resillience has really shone through. Although I dealt with this on the day it really is down to the teams that make them so welcome, at ease with great instruction so they have a great first taste of the world of work and a positive experience.

My 14 year old has been doing work experience this week with Penventon Park Hotel who have been fabulous and she is learning so much. A very valuable lesson she learnt yesterday cannot go unshared when her social anxiety / shyness got the better of her and she became totally overwhelmed. The lesson she learned came from the wonderful Lisa E. who was so kind, understanding and thoughtful. She taught her in that alien workplace environment which my 14 year old found so overwhelming, it’s ok to take a moment, take baby steps and to talk it out. These are lessons my husband and I have tried to instill in her all of her life but yesterday she witnessed them from someone to whom I am immensely grateful. Kindness and compassion go a long way - it did yesterday as my daughter is getting herself ready for work experience today with a renewed vigour and feeling of self-worth. Thank you, Lisa.

Up next in our coffee catch-up series is Agris our Bar Manager. For those who visit often, you'll know his unforgettable personality. This week we sat down with him to delve into his journey in hospitality, his pivotal role as Bar Manager, and to get an exclusive look at our exciting new venture: The Wine Tasting Rooms. Here is a snippet: "The room is pretty much finished and it looks absolutely stunning, all I can say is ‘wow’. We’ve already hosted a private event and saw it in all of its glory. It was jaw-dropping. The lights, ambience, the temperature, everything just fits down there. The job now is getting it opened and used. I can already imagine the dinner parties down there and the stories and memories that will be made." Read the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/dwviNqjV

Following on with our Coffee Catchups we spoke with Kevin, our Senior Duty Manager, to find out more about his role and responsibilities, and how he got started in his career. What’s your favourite part of your job? "Working with staff on the floor and trying to build them, trying to get the best out of them, and building up their confidence. I left school with no qualifications, but I had someone who believed in me, so they put me through my holiday park management course, my NVQ level 3 in Management. Introducing... Coffee Catch Ups, where over the next few months we'll be interviewing some of our amazing team members, talking about their roles and showcasing what they get up to day to day. First up is our Learning and Development Manager, Lisa. How long have you been doing Training and Development? How did you get started? "A friend actually told me about the Learning the Development job at the Penventon, and I’m so pleased that I went for it. It was a new role and no one really knew what it would look like or how it would develop. We’ve turned it into a real management and team development programme. So, not only do we have our online learning portal which is open to everyone, we also deliver training programmes on our policies and procedures so we’re building those skills and knowledge for managers to do their jobs better and train their teams better. Seeing that change in culture over the last two years has been amazing." To read the full interview click here: bit.ly/3Q8amOe
