Industrial Designer - Structural Innovation Designer

Day two of London Packaging Week was packed with insights and inspiring discussions across the industry. The most thought provoking talk of the day was certainly the discussion between Miles Beale, Robert Malin, Tamara Roberts, Stephen Russell and Gary Smith. Premiumisation and recyclability have seemingly been at opposite ends of the spectrum, but this is being tackled in the drinks industry by companies like When in Rome | B Corp™ . Refreshingly, CEO Rob recognises that their new cardboard bottle isn’t perfect as it is effectively a bag-in-bottle. But, in terms of CO2 emissions, it is less impactful than glass counter parts. This attitude should be adopted by more of the industry, celebration of progression coupled with recognition of shortcomings. Another highlight was a panel with Waqas Qureshi, Marc Powell PLY, Stefan Casey, Lucy Burgess (nee Overett), and Katie Roselaar, who emphasized that inclusive design benefits everyone — better design is inclusive design. Collaboration was the theme of the day. Sharing learnings, joining forces and resources, pushing each other to do better and holding everyone accountable. Tamara Roberts summed it up perfectly: "Collaboration is the only way we will win" in the fight for sustainability.

Day one of London Packaging Week has come and gone, and for me, it highlighted both genuinely progressive and worryingly misleading approaches to #sustainability from brands big and small. The conversation between William Connolly (Diageo), Lena Danielsson (The Absolut Group), Lauren McKenzie (DESIGNER PARFUMS) and Tanguy Pellen (Skarbek) was wonderful—positive and constructive. #Openinnovation as a tool for cross-competition sharing might just be the approach needed to bridge the convenience gap and get consumers to truly embrace the new habits that can help us move from recycling to reusing. Less encouraging was the faint odor of #greenwashing. The pressure to innovate in this space and deliver tangible results may be the driving force, but the misrepresentation of facts, such as accepted contamination rates in the paper recycling stream to a knowledgeable audience, is concerning. Celebrating small wins is essential—positive vibes carry a lot of weight—but presenting them as something more, without acknowledging the shortcomings, isn't progress over perfection. We can do a whole lot better, and that means embracing collaboration, introspection, and honesty. Little nod to Cory Connors ♻️📦(Orora Packaging Solutions) "Sustainability is a journey where we might never reach the destination".

pi global has helped dramatically revitalise Bru, a popular coffee brand by Unilever in a market dominated by international brands. We relished the opportunity to elevate the brand as a true local gem, rooted in the rich heritage of Southern India.   Inspired by the rustic charm of "Farm Fresh Coffee" and the authentic traditions of South Indian culture, we embarked on a journey to reshape Bru's identity.   Through a bold visual identity reimagining, we aimed to evoke the essence of Southern India and change consumers' perceptions. This required more than just a subtle evolution – it demanded boldness!   We developed a disruptive brand identity design focussed on retaining but dramatising the green equity and emphasising the brand's integrity, all while celebrating the region's natural beauty. From incorporating literal cues of coffee picking to introducing a golden map of Southern India into the Brand Mark, every element was crafted to strengthen Bru's connection to its roots.   We’re delighted with the result… which exudes the emotion of a brand that's not just manufactured, rather it’s grown with love and authenticity in Southern India.    #BruCoffee #BrandDesign #PackagingDesign #FMCG  #BrandAgency #Branding #piglobal #brandshaping
