The New York City legal market in numbers 🗽 BigLaw dominates growth in NYC and lower ranked AM Law 100 firms are struggling to keep pace with the top 30. In the last 12 months, the top 30 firms have increased Partner headcount by 6.8%, compared to just 1.2% for firms ranked 31-100. Why are so many AM Law firms looking to merge? 🤝📈 Following the burst of merger news from Troutman Pepper / Locke Lord LLP, Womble Bond Dickinson (US) LLP / Lewis Roca, and Ballard Spahr LLP / Lane Powell PC, we’ve taken a look at what’s driving firms to merge and what the combined firms will look like once complete. Firms ranked 51-100 have experienced slower growth than the top 50 and are merging in order to stay competitive. In the last 12 months AM Law 50 firms have increased Partner headcount by 3.2%, compared to just 0.7% from the second 50 firms. Some of the Group8 team recently had the pleasure of attending a fantastic Pirical event at an uber cool venue, South Place Hotel, London for ‘Sips, Bites and Legal Insights’. The focus was the lateral market in London with some, as always, useful aggregated information about which firms’ partner cohort has grown the most in the last 4 years. We have been fans and users of Pirical for a long time - having an AI driven tool capturing live market metrics and data ensures that more of our time can be spent analysing it, enabling our clients to make the right informed decisions about their growth. It’s a super smart tool run by super smart people, who understand the legal industry and go out of their way to create a sense of community amongst their users. Thank you Jason Ku, Chris Griffiths and the Pirical crew for putting together a fab evening - we learned stuff, made new friends and were left challenged (trying to work out what the Keanu Reeves sign meant!) It was also great to see a ‘firm favourite’ up there on the leader board Ashurst !

There’s been some exciting growth in the Boston legal market recently! BigLaw firms have been growing rapidly and opening offices to tap into the city’s tech and biotech industries. We’ve taken a closer look at where this growth has been occurring.
