Incredible offer from the Challenger Society for Marine Science The ECR Oceans media and communications workshop will be happening on Monday 2nd September at SAMS in Oban. There are still a couple of spaces remaining on the planned workshop during the Challenger Conference. Here is some information about the planned training by Russell Arnott of Incredible Oceans: “For over 70 years, scientists have been speaking to the public, to policymakers, to decision-makers about the state of our ocean… And yet our ocean faces threats like never before. Clearly something isn’t working. We recognize that getting audiences to understand science is important; yet we aim to go further and make audiences care and act upon your research. As scientists, communicating is at the heart of everything we do; we communicate our research to others within our field via conferences, scientific papers and policy documents. Yet few scientists would ever class themselves as a ‘communicator’. Our workshop emphasizes that public engagement is not just an altruistic endeavor; there are countless benefits to participants’ careers, to funding opportunities and to the impact they have on stakeholders. Helping researchers to improve presentations, papers and posters, we cover effective language use, audience awareness and barriers to engagement. In short, helping researchers gain the skills that increase the likelihood that research is recognised and acted upon. Within an academic context, communication often falls to the comms department or a handful of enthusiastic individuals. Yet ALL researchers benefit from becoming better communicators. By better communicating your research, you increase your paper citations, you can better pitch your research to funding bodies and grant-givers, and crucially, your research will be better understood and acted upon by policymakers, decision makers and other stakeholders. Delivered and developed by marine scientists, Incredible Oceans CIC have delivered communication training at academic institutions across the world, with over 90% of participants reporting an increase in confidence when presenting to different audiences. See Clippele et al, 2021. The Future Of Our Seas: Marine Scientists and Creative Professionals Collaborate for Science Communication.” The Challenger Society will be subsidizing 50% of the cost of the workshop and so the resulting cost for participants will be £100. Please email siddhi@hotmail.co.uk if you are interested in participating!

Gold medal performance at the Olympics by our friends from Fluidion: Explore the detailed results from the Triathlon races on their Open Data Initiative page. 1 https://lnkd.in/entYgZYA Dive into their just-published article “Addressing Underestimation of Waterborne Disease Risks Due to Fecal Indicator Bacteria Bound in Aggregates.” This article highlights the limitations of current standard methods, which can greatly underestimate the risk of waterborne disease in the presence of aggregated bacteria, and how comprehensive E.coli measurement techniques, like Fluidion's ALERT, offer a more accurate risk assessment.
