🎓 MI3 Conference 2024 - Research Deep Dive 🔍 At this year's conference, four leading academics will present their research into the most important topics facing capital markets. Second to present will be Vincent Wolff, outlining his research entitled "Taxing Financial Transaction in Multiple Markets". His research looks at how: - Asymmetric Effects of Tax: Taxing stocks reduces their trading more than options trading, improving liquidity in taxed markets but harming it in untaxed ones. - Empirical Findings: In Italy, France, and Spain, stock trading drops with FTT, but options trading is mostly unaffected. Informed traders move to untaxed markets. - Welfare and Tax Design: FTTs can improve welfare and generate revenue if market maker exemptions are lenient. Strict exemptions, like in Italy, may cause greater welfare loss than revenue gain. After the presentation, discussant Tobias Dieler will delve into the detail and question the conclusions. First to present will be Bart Zhou Yueshen, outlining his work in anticompetitive price referencing. His research looks at how: - Off-exchange trades often use on-exchange prices as references, which reduces competition among market makers on exchanges and raises trading costs for investors, while ensuring best execution. - This referencing allows market makers to profit from off-exchange trades, leading to market fragmentation and reinforcing illiquidity, even with increased competition and regulatory interventions like order-by-order auctions. - Theoretical modelling shows that as market makers compete less on exchanges due to referencing, liquidity decreases, raising trading costs for investors and worsening overall market liquidity.
