The landscape is shifting: candidates, especially in tech, are increasingly expecting to be compensated for time-consuming tasks in the hiring process. We’ve seen anything from $100 Amazon gift cards to $1500 payments for week-long tech task projects. It’s becoming more common as candidates (especially in high demand roles) have more leverage in the market – with multiple offers on the table, the incentive has to be there to make them participate in tasks that go beyond a few hours. But for smaller companies or startups, paying for multiple candidate tasks could become financially unsustainable, particularly if the task doesn't guarantee a hire. So how do you feel about paying for tech tasks during hiring? Necessary to attract the best talent? Or have you ever been paid for a tech task as part of an interview process?

Instead, target jobs where your experience matches the requirements as closely as possible—and make sure your CV reflects it with evidence and results. Recruiters won't submit 'wildcard' candidates.
