About us
Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) is a world-leading research organization, and registered charity, undertaking pioneering marine research for the benefit of us all. The ocean and seas are essential to every one of us. They regulate weather and climate, produce oxygen for us to breathe, provide food, chemicals and energy, and support our economies by providing employment in many sectors including transport, tourism, fishing, energy and biotechnology. Our research is a unique combination of observation, experimentation, modelling activities and socio-economic expertise, which together provides a greater understanding of the dynamic and complex marine environment. Topics we cover range from carbon dioxide capture and storage to marine plastics. In addition, we have a commercial trading subsidiary, PML Applications Ltd, which delivers services, products and solutions related to the marine environment in key sectors such as ballast water management, biofouling, and satellite applications. 🛰️ FOCUS ON: #WaterQuality in the #BlackSea using #satellite observations. In a recent presentation at the #MARBLUE2024 conference, a team of international researchers including PML’s Dr Liz Atwood explored the use of #SatelliteObservations to track the dominant timescales of optical variability in the surface waters of the Black Sea. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eCy_dKFH During her stay in Romania, Dr Atwood took some fascinating photos and videos that she shared with us in this gallery... She commented, “The bioluminescence bloom was an amazing event to witness, it happened during the conference and continued a little into the following week.”

A more comprehensive evaluation of marine strategies, including ecological, economic, social, and cultural values, and the development of ‘innovation laboratories’ dedicated to Ocean policy issues are among the recommendations of a new report from the European Marine Board IVZW, which represents 38 Member organisations from 19 European countries. PML's Professor Nicky Beaumont was among the co-authors of Chapter 2 (Ocean & People) which highlights the need for a “greater multi-scale, mechanistic understanding of how human activities are embedded in ecosystems to support ecosystem-based management.”

🌊 Does your school already have a project focused on ocean or #WaterLiteracy? You can still apply to become part of the #Network of European Blue Schools! Whether funded by ProBleu or not, if your school is working on a "blue project" that engages students and promotes the protection of our oceans and waterways, you can gain recognition for your efforts 💙 Apply until 15 Dec to join the #NEBS!👉🏼https://lnkd.in/eePKUXCT #EUBlueSchools #OceanLiteracy European Marine Science Educators' Association (EMSEA)
🏫 🌊 Applications for the Network of European Blue Schools are now open! Starting this school year, we’re introducing three levels of certification to recognize the varying levels of engagement and commitment from participating schools: 🔹 Blue School (Entry Level) 🔹 Aquamarine Blue School (Intermediate Level) 🔹 Ultramarine Blue School (Advanced Level) How does it work ❓ Schools already certified or applying for the first time can stay in the Network indefinitely. But as our program evolves, we encourage schools to re-apply each year, especially if they're continuing or developing new projects. This can help schools achieve a higher certification level! Join the Network of #EUBlueSchools and be part of a community dedicated to preserving our precious marine ecosystems 🐙. Discover: 📚 Educational resources 📅 Events 🧩 Projects 🤝 Partnership opportunities Applications open until ⏰ 15 December.
