🚀 UK Broadband Update Q3 2024: gigabit target almost achieved as FTTP growth shifts to the East 🚀 We’re excited to share the latest insights from our ThinkPoint broadband availability dataset, which now encompasses 1.7 million UK postcodes. As we track the ever-evolving broadband landscape, our Q3 2024 analysis reveals significant progress towards national gigabit broadband targets. KEY HIGHLIGHTS: - At the end of Q3 2024, the overall FTTP coverage was 23.2m premises (70.5% of the UK total). This metric was up from 67.7% in Q2 2024. - Nearly 8.3 million premises (25% of the UK premises) had access to 2 or more FTTP networks, and 1.1m were covered by 3+ fibre networks. - The FTTP coverage was 50% or higher in 84.5% of local authorities, up from 77.5% of LAs three months earlier. We recorded a number of high growth areas in East Midlands and the East of England. - The largest number of FTTP premises added was in Stoke-on-Trent (+28K), Birmingham (+18K), and King’s Lynn and West Norfolk (+13K). - Stoke-on-Trent also saw the most marked increase in the proportion of premises passed with FTTP – from 42% in Q2 2024 to 64.3% in Q3 2024. - Nationwide 1.7m premises could choose between two or more fibre altnets. Almost 134K premises were served by 3+ alternative fibre networks. Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eduU5vdp #UKBroadband #FTTP #DigitalDivide #PointTopic #BroadbandCoverage #Telecoms

In Q2 2024, global fixed broadband connections reached 1.46 billion, following a quarterly growth of 0.95%.  We recorded a decline in fixed broadband subscriptions in 18 countries[1], down from 23 in Q1 2024. Some of these markets have high mobile subscriber penetration, others are experiencing economic headwinds or are already highly saturated markets, for example Hong Kong, Switzerland, Monaco. Yet others are still at war. https://lnkd.in/eAkmBTjC #broadband #FWA #satellite #fullfibre #broadbandsubscribers #isps

We are building on our reputation of providing granular, reliable broadband availability data for 25 years. Using Point Topic's experience, research, and new data sources, we are creating an increasingly detailed picture of broadband across Europe and moving towards a unified platform for European broadband data. - We recently integrated a large number of government and open data sources, unifying data from various APIs and reporting granularities into our database. - Proprietary data is continuously added, with recent batches covering France, Belgium, and Italy. - Granularity is being increased, with a new grid at 100m x 100m granularity becoming available. - We are refining our model weights and logic to better combine different data sources. - We're investing in building an ontology to semantically tag data points and relationships, allowing users and LLMs to extract more insights from our data. If you're interested in granular European broadband data, check out our demo: https://lnkd.in/dyTyu6CS

If you started your journey in machine learning land and remember what Web3 should have been then semantics and ontologies will be old friends. For the future of AI they are a necessity and it's pretty helpful just for straight-up normal human intelligences.

Connecting the Dots - A comprehensive perspective on the broadband market backed by an ontology At Point Topic, we have a lot of data on the broadband market. As is true for all companies, different products are built for different purposes and different clients, using different data. Over time, this means that you end up with different sets of definitions and outputs that do not fully align with each other. That is fine because definitions and formats need to be most suitable to the question a dataset tries to answer. But the question is, how does one keep these different sets of definitions, outputs and formats aligned? One simple answer is to use lookup tables to keep different datasets aligned. In SQL databases, foreign keys can be used to have one value reference a value in another table. That works fine, to an extent. However, this is labour-intensive and, crucially, you cannot use this approach when you’re lining up values as well as the underlying definitions for your values. For example, while we have lots of data on BT and Openreach, and often data for one is representative of the other, lining them up means you need to also be aware how the two are different and that doing so will, at some point, cause complications. This is where ontologies come in. Assigning definitions to concepts and things, as well as the relationships between them, allows us to classify data and formalise the relationships between different data in a robust, reliable way. In our context, this is especially useful for understand relationships between ISPs, network operators, wholesalers, retailers as well as the real-world, in-the-ground infrastructure they operate and use, and the products they offer to end-users. While there have been previous attempts at creating ontologies for the telecoms industry, they have had low visibility, did not make their codebase public or were simply not compatible with our requirements. Our approach was to build a new ontology, based on earlier academic literature, and building it around our broad catalogue of real-world data and business needs. The ontology is maintained separately from all of our products, with classes and relationships defined and maintained independently, based on best practices. Data gets tagged and then populates this web of definitions, gradually building up a web of data to represent a complete view of the broadband sector as we (and our data) see it. The ontology allows us to build bridges between all of our products. This allows us to have a complete picture of the broadband market in one environment, where we can query data across multiple dimensions to answer questions in a significantly shorter time than before. We are continuing to work to make this picture even more complete and eventually share this ability with our clients. Full article (with more 📈!): https://lnkd.in/gMTzgDGi
