We are a community of migrants organising towards dignity, power and justice

About us

POMOC is a grassroots nonprofit that fosters creative collaboration and actionable solidarity between Polish women living in the UK and other migrant communities to work together towards dignity, power and justice. We build spaces for actionable solidarity between our communities and other migrant groups, while creating opportunities for anyone - at any stage of their organising journey - to develop their creative leadership and put it into action locally. While POMOC’s organising base is Polish women, our work reaches beyond our community, and we look for ways to support other Eastern Europeans and migrants. Our core work covers three overlapping areas: * Direct Support: we provide multilingual support to Polish, Romanian, and Roma communities in the UK on how to apply for 'settled' and 'pre-settled' status. We are also developing the Community Toolkit project, which provides support on how to access welfare, housing, and mental health services. *Democratic Participation: we run civic engagement and “get out the vote” campaigns to spur democratic participation in the Polish diaspora and build connections with other communities. These campaigns focus on UK local elections, EU Parliamentary elections, and Polish elections. Moreover, these campaigns have become a tool for base-building, identifying up and coming leaders, and tackling broader issues of political marginalisation and voter suppression. *Political Education: we design political education programming that builds progressive leadership among Polish and East-European women and nonbinary people while addressing head-on systemic issues like racism, anti-blackness and homophobia.

Dear Rt Hon Yvette Cooper, We are writing to you as local residents of Gosport and Oxfordshire, people with experience of detention, visitor groups to detention, organisations working with people in detention, academics, and others with an expressed concern at the announcement to continue with the plans made under the previous Conservative government to reopen Haslar and Campsfield House Immigration Removal Centres (IRCs). We urge you to abandon these plans. 1. Reduce the Immigration Detention estate: No human should be incarcerated for administrative convenience. End the use of detention as a tool of immigration enforcement starting by using detention as a last resort and ending the detention of vulnerable people, in line with Objective 13 of the Global Compact for Migration.  2. Review and Implement the Brook House Inquiry Recommendations: Ensure that the systemic failures identified in the inquiry are addressed and that similar abuses do not occur in other IRCs.  3. Uphold the Values of Fairness and Humanity: Align immigration policies with principles of fairness, humanity, openness, diversity and inclusion, as recommended by the Windrush review.  4. Invest in community-based alternatives: Redirect resources away from detention and into community-based support that prioritise dignity, fair treatment, and human rights.  5. Engage with Individuals with Lived Experience of Detention: Any future policy decisions must be led by those with lived experience of detention and migration, ensuring that their voices are at the forefront of creating a truly just system. POMOC Head of Direct Services Natalia is a resident of Gosport and co-built the No Detention No Haslar campaign.

    • Big bold text in black with a white rectangular outline says ‘50+ organisations, 85 signatories, one demand:’. Below, in coral, it says 'choose freedom!'. In the new paragraph, in smaller coral text on a black rectangular outline it says 'Keep Haslar and Campsfield closed'. White text below says 'read our asks in the post. Learn more from the comments’. In the background there is a picture of the closed Haslar detention centre, taken by Natalia Byer. It's surrounded by scaffolding and barriers. The sky is bright, calm and hopeful.

Community organising is our strength. When the far-right attacks, we keep each other safe. This escalation of violence we're seeing is a result of years of systemic racism in the UK. The government scapegoats Muslims and migrant communities on a daily basis, in an attempt to place the blame elsewhere for its own failures. Politicians and media spread harmful narratives about people of colour, but fail to call out fascism, racism, and Islamophobia. We demand that the state and the media call the attacks what they are. It’s domestic terrorism. It’s pogroms. History also taught us that fascism thrives in times of economic crisis. We need to keep organising for better housing, our work rights, and dignified living conditions. To keep building a world where people - regardless of their legal status or identity – have the freedom to thrive socially, economically, politically, and culturally where they live. This should be our long-term goal, but we also need to act now... CHECK UP ON YOUR NEIGHBOURS: In moments like this we need care and day-to-day solidarity and kindness. USE THE CORRECT LANGUAGE: Call it what it is, a pogrom, a racist and Islamophobic attack. Avoiding this language will only reinforce the dominant narratives. JOIN LOCAL ANTI-FASCIST NETWORKS: We are stronger working together and using existing networks, rather than taking action on our own. Find out what your local anti-fascist groups are doing and support their work. DEEPEN OUR KNOWLEDGE: Keep an eye on our stories and Linktree for resources on organising and staying safe during this time. JOIN ON THE GROUND ACTIONS: Before doing that, please assess your personal safety and window of comfort. If you’re joining counter-demos, remember about security measures. Go to our Linktree for a guide compiled by @netpolcampaigns And remember, there are other forms of solidarity gatherings e.g. outside a mosque or a migrant-led business or centre. LET’S KEEP EACH OTHER SAFE!

    • On a dark-grey background with white brush strokes in the corners, text in all caps says ‘As eastern europeans living in the uk we are extremely worried to see fascists attack our Neighbours: Muslims, migrants, including refugees, and racialised people. The rioters are shouting slurs, throwing bottles, bricks and flares, destroying people’s homes and places of work and worship and other community spaces. In moments like this, we need to come together to keep our streets safe.’. Most of the text is in white, but the words ‘fascists attack our Neighbours: Muslims, migrants, including refugees, and racialised people’ and ‘we need to come together to keep our streets safe’ are in coral to stand out.
