POWERful Women
Non-profit Organization Management
PfW is working for greater representation of women at the top of the UK's energy industry.
About us
Chaired by Katie Jackson, and based at the Energy Institute as project partner, POWERful Women (PfW) is working for a diverse, inclusive and gender-balanced energy industry in the UK. The energy sector is tackling a wide range of important issues – from energy security and affordability to building a more sustainable low carbon future. Because industry competitiveness relies on being able to attract and retain a diverse pool of talent capable of bringing fresh perspectives, PfW believes much stronger female representation is needed at the top tables. By bringing together a mix of industry, academic and political leaders – spanning a wide range of technology sectors, services, roles and viewpoints in the industry – we work to support and encourage energy companies to attract and cultivate female talent and appoint more women to senior roles as part of building stronger businesses, adapting to changing markets and engaging better with consumers. Our "40 by 30" goals are for women to occupyat least 40% of middle management and leadership roles in the UK energy sector by 2030. To achieve this we SUPPORT, CHALLENGE and CONNECT. Find out more about our work by visiting our website, subscribing to our newsletter or getting in touch.

RE-ENERGISING D&I AT WOOD – a case study Many energy companies are on a journey to their diversity and inclusion goals. This case study from Wood, a member of our Energy Leaders’ Coalition, shows how a global D&I strategy is helping the business work towards their target of 40% female representation in senior leadership roles by 2030. It sets out the fundamentals for moving the dial, including: ✅ leaders communicating a clear commitment to D&I, championed by allies at all levels ✅ support through employee networks ✅ effective and reliable methods to monitor and measure through data 💬 “At Wood we are on a journey to create a more diverse workforce where our remarkable people feel respected and that they belong, so that they can thrive in an inclusive working environment. I joined POWERful Women’s ELC as I know we can influence sustainable change by working collectively.” – Craig Shanaghey, Executive President, Projects, at Wood. Cool news klaxon. I am completely thrilled and honoured to feature in the INvolve - The Inclusion People Global Heroes Role Model List for 2024. This prestigious list recognises only 100 women each year for their exceptional efforts in dismantling barriers and shattering glass ceilings for women in global business. My inclusion is partly due to my previous role, and work in my current board positions. Supported by YouTube, this list highlights Role Models who, while not working professionally in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, have made it their personal mission to drive change and make a difference. For those who know me, you’ll absolutely understand that I don’t seek the spotlight for myself. Instead, I use my leadership platform to highlight important issues that deserve attention and discussion. I firmly believe in the importance of role models. Early in my career, in male-dominated industries, there was a significant lack of positive female executive role models. I can’t recall where I first heard this, but it resonated deeply enough for me to repeat often: “If you can’t see it, you can’t be it.” Now, as a Chair having been the CEO, I find Annabel Crabb’s words perfectly encapsulate my feelings and so I’ll borrow them: “Don’t be ashamed of anything you’ve achieved. Ever. It’s statistically much more difficult for a person like you than it is for a white bloke to become the CEO of an organisation. If you feel awkward claiming the status for yourself, then don’t do it for yourself. Do it for the thousands of people you will encounter who - after meeting you as their female CEO - will incorporate you into their mental image bank of what CEOs look like. Do it for the women you haven’t even met yet who one day, agonising over whether to put themselves forward for a big job, will - thinking of you - decide to do it.” I accept this recognition, not just for myself, but for all the incredible women in my network that have the potential to step into more senior leadership roles, and normalising female success. Thank you for your incredible support. I will continue to advocate for gender equality until there is no gender pay gap and the workplace is a positive and inclusive environment for all women. #dei #inclusion #rolemodel #leadership #femaleleaders #genderequality POWERful Women WUN - Womens Utilities Network Women in Work Summit Women's Energy Network Alliance Lean In Energy & Utility Skills 30% Club UK Women on Boards UK Women's Engineering Society UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC)
