Yesterday, we announced that The Last Dinner Party have signed with PPL for the collection of their international neighbouring rights royalties. The Last Dinner Party have had a meteoric rise to the top. After playing some of the UK’s smallest independent venues in 2023, this year saw them headline London’s Roundhouse and tour across Europe, Asia Pacific and North America. They were named the BBC’s Sound of 2024 and topped the Official UK Albums Chart in February this year with their debut album Prelude to Ecstasy, We are excited to see their continued success and are honoured they have chosen PPL to collect their international neighbouring rights royalties through our extensive global network. A big thank you to Peter Mensch and the team at Q Prime Artist Management for their partnership and positive words on the announcement. We look forward to supporting The Last Dinner Party as they continue to captivate audiences worldwide. You can read the full announcement below. https://lnkd.in/edGKFHFk

July brought a variety of events and highlights, one of which included speaking on the panel at Cancer Platform’s ‘Evening of Hope’ – an opportunity for leaders across the worlds of music, tech and philanthropy to connect with Cancer Awareness teams, survivors and medical experts, share experiences and help form powerful cross-industry collaborations. It was inspiring evening, capped off with a moving performance from singer and songwriter, Ella Henderson. Thank you to Vicki Connerty for hosting, and to Tony Colville, Mike Zatyka and the team at Cancer Platform for organising such an inspiring evening. It was also a pleasure to attend the 15th anniversary of Small Green Shoots along with my fellow PPL colleagues. Small Green Shoots is a unique charity, founded by our Director of Music Industry Engagement, Natalie Wade, which supports opportunities to get the experience required for a long-term sustainable career in the creative industries, for young people that are unlikely to get that chance, save for the work of Small Green Shoots. Everyone at PPL sends our love & support for Natalie as she continues her treatment for cancer. We are all really missing her presence in the office. Also in July, we hosted our Summer PPL all-company connect event, a jam-packed afternoon hearing from our various teams about some of our exciting progress and plans. We were joined by William Kennard, or as he’s better known, the ‘Status’ from the Electronic Music Duo Chase & Status. As well as a successful career music career, Will founded East London Arts and Music in 2014, an inspiring organisation that we support through PPL Giving, which aims to give those aged 16-19 from low-income & under-represented backgrounds the tools to find careers in the creative industry (across music, games, and film). I enjoyed attending the 100th anniversary of MECHANICAL-COPYRIGHT PROTECTION SOCIETY LIMITED (MCPS) for a wonderful evening of musical performances, speeches, and celebration on such a landmark occasion. Thank you to Jackie Alway OBE and Paul Clements for inviting me as their guest and congratulations to Jackie, Paul and all of MCPS on achieving a century! Finally, I enjoyed attending year 27 of the "Trevor Trophy" where 26 of us play the Ryder Cup format over 3 days, this year at Hawkstone Park in Shropshire. Formally football, cricket & rugby colleagues, now it is the one time each year that most of us catch up. Not the most relaxing but certainly takes your mind off work for a few days! Today marks day one of the voluntary UK Code of Good Practice on Transparency in Music Streaming coming into force. The activation of the Code is an important commitment by the UK music industry to improve transparency around music streaming licensing and royalties. The development of the Code was a collaborative effort across the music industry, and signed by trade associations, membership organisations and other collecting societies on behalf of their members. The Intellectual Property Office UK will continue to engage with the industry, and there will be a formal evaluation of its impact in 2026. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gJpV-qmb

Celebrating 20 Years of the Landmark VPL and MTV Deal 📅 2004 marked a significant milestone for the music industry: the 20th anniversary of the crucial licensing deal between MTV Network Europe (MTVNE) and Video Performance Limited (VPL), PPL’s sister company that licenses music videos when they are played in public or broadcast on TV. This landmark agreement, reached after a widely reported dispute, nearly saw independent music videos disappear from MTV’s channels. However, the successful negotiation ensured that indie music videos continued to be featured on one of the most influential music platforms of the time. The agreement laid the foundation for a sustained relationship between VPL and MTV, generating tens of millions of pounds for independent artists and labels across Europe over the past two decades. Key players like Martin Mills (Beggars Group), Alison Wenham, Tony Clark, David Harmsworth, and our CEO Peter Leathem OBE were instrumental in this negotiation. As Peter Leathem shares: “Martin and Alison’s ability to hold together the Indie Music community across Europe was no mean feat and came down to the enormous respect they both had across the music industry. I am delighted that MTV reviewed their approach to licensing based on the feedback from the Indie sector and that we have maintained an excellent working relationship with MTV over the last 20 years.” Join us in celebrating this momentous occasion and read more about its lasting impact below:
