An international development organisation putting ingenious ideas to work so people in poverty can change their world.
About us
We are an international development organisation putting ingenious ideas to work so people in poverty can change their world. We help people find solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems. Challenges made worse by catastrophic climate change and persistent gender inequality. We work with communities to develop ingenious, lasting and locally owned solutions for agriculture, water and waste management, climate resilience and clean energy. And we share what works with others, so answers that start small can grow big. We’re a global change-making group of problem solvers, knowledge mobilisers and expert advisors. We work together to multiply our impact and help shape a world that works better for everyone. The group consists of a UK registered charity with community projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America, an independent development publishing company and a technical consulting service. We believe in the power of small to change the big picture. And that together we can take practical action to build futures free from poverty. Ever wondered what the future holds? “The Future with Hannah Fry” is giving some amazing insight into what things might look like in 10, 20 or 50 years' time. We particularly loved their episode on 'Water'. Not just because it focussed on the challenges some of the communities we work with in Turkana, Kenya are facing, and how they are solving them, but because it made it clear that access to water connects us all. So, the latest report from the Global Commission on the Economics of Water is worrying. It has identified that demand for fresh water is expected to outstrip its supply by 40% by the end of this decade: https://lnkd.in/d4wPC6VN We’re working hard to help those who are at the sharp end of the problem. Watch the Hannah Fry programme for free to see how we are working with communities to help them adapt to their new way of life: https://lnkd.in/dMjhhWW5 Bloomberg Originals #ClimateChange #WaterScarcity #TechForGood #SustainableSolutions #Turkana #Innovation #Adaptation #Collaboration #FutureTech

Context Newsroom by Thomson Reuters has recently published an insightful piece that underscores the crucial role of cross-border climate cooperation in South Asia, particularly in mitigating the devastating impacts of floods. The article emphasizes how collaboration between nations could save lives and preserve resources in the face of increasing climate risks. We are proud that our project, Strengthening Flood Resilience through Cross Border Early Warning Systems between India, and Nepal, was featured as a shining example of how effective cooperation can lead to real, life-saving action. Practical Action’s work on early warning systems and flood resilience is helping communities on both sides of the border prepare for and respond properly to flooding, reducing damage to lives, livelihoods, and the environment. As climate impacts continue to grow more intense, fostering regional cooperation is crucial for developing long term solutions to protect the most vulnerable populations. Our cross-border efforts demonstrate what can be achieved when communities and nations come together with a shared purpose. Thank you to Journalist Md.Tahmid Zami for showcasing this important work. How (not) to feed the world: https://lnkd.in/eY_BPgHQ Food is the third most basic human need after air and water. We all know that food insecurity is a growing issue, but what if the way we farm is making it worse? Industrial agriculture is damaging the environment and failing to deliver sustainable solutions. That’s why we’re championing regenerative farming - an approach that works with nature to build resilience, restore biodiversity, and ensure long-term food security. Curious about how this approach could feed the world?☝️ #WorldFoodDay #RegenerativeAgriculture

The world's heating bill is rising - here's what we're doing about it. Ensuring communities can adapt to their changing climate is crucial. We need to first understand likely hazards and then, working with communities, we need to take steps to prevent them and make resilience a way of life. We’re advising people on how to adapt their lives and put plans and early warning systems in place to predict natural hazards and stop them turning into disasters. Together with our colleagues at the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance, we’ve expanded our focus to include extreme heat. Take a look at our latest blog on why this is such an issue: https://lnkd.in/etSNVfFj #DRRday #ResilienceForAll #EWS

💡To improve lives and livelihoods and achieve energy access for all, we need to reach more people with affordable and sustainable energy, but how?💡 Past experience has shown us that we need to boost access markets as well as improving last-mile distribution to hard-to-reach communities. No one group can do this alone. We need to bring together energy businesses, entrepreneurs (particularly women), and local communities. We also need to work with governments and other decision makers to generate systems change – creating enabling policies and guiding investment. At this week’s #GOGSFE24 conference, Senior Energy Expert, Zibusiso Ncube, will be speaking about the importance of inclusivity in ‘Empowering energy: Gender-transformative solutions for a just energy transition’. GOGLA, Government of Kenya, The World Bank's ESMAP - Energy Sector Management Assistance Program, Global Distributors Collective (GDC), Africa Minigrid Developers Association (AMDA), Africa E-Mobility Alliance, Nairobi Climate Network, Global Platform for Action (GPA). #LeaveNoOneBehind #EnergyAccess
