Charity working to end the motherhood penalty

About us

Pregnant Then Screwed protects, supports and promotes the rights of mothers who suffer the effects of systemic, cultural, and institutional discrimination through our various schemes and activities, including: A free legal advice service, lobbying the Government for legislative change, and a mentor scheme that supports women who are considering legal action against their employer. As of January 2025, our work has been mentioned in parliament 138 times by cross party MPs. We have won multiple awards including Small Charity of the Year (Third Sector, 2023), Communications Campaign of The Year (Third Sector, 2023), Best Social Purpose Campaign (PR Week, 2023) and a Highly Commended trophy for In-House Team of The Year (PR Week, 2024). In October 2022 we organised the March of the Mummies, a national protest where 15,000 parents marched across 11 cities in the UK to demand Government reform of childcare, flexible working and parental leave. The march has been credited with triggering a national conversation about how the system is failing parents.

  • 🚨THE EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS BILL UPDATE🚨 It’s been a busy old week in Parliament and we have some good news! Firstly, We are giddy as kippers to tell you that the Employment Rights Bill passed its third reading in Parliament on Wednesday. This means it’s highly likely that by October 2026 we will have new laws on flexible working, and let me tell you - they are a beauty! ✨ 🤔Now, it’s a little bit technical, but stick with us. The new law will mean that if an employer rejects your flexible working request, they have to justify it. They will need to set out, in writing, why (using 1 of the 8 business reasons). This justification could be used in a tribunal against an employer should the employee believe it is not justified. This switches the law on its head - rather than the onus being on the employee to make a case for why they should work flexibly, the employer now has to make the case for why it won’t work. It will soon be much easier for an employer to agree to a request, than to reject a request. 🙌 🤷🏽 Secondly, you might be wondering what the result of the PAPA amendment vote was on Tuesday night - long story short - there wasn’t one! 😎 BUT, it’s not bad news. So many of you wrote to put the pressure on MP’s to back the amendment that the Government committed to starting their review of parental leave in June, and completing it within 12 months. 🩵We are so proud to have worked with Angela Rayner and her team to finally make a change! 👏🏼Thank you to all other campaigners, supporters and organisations that have piled on the pressure over the years - this is a win for us all! Any questions, drop them below! 👇 #FlexForAll

  • Over the weekend, we celebrated our 10 year anniversary! 10 years of raising hell and getting s*** done! 🤯 A decade ago, one mother spoke up. Today, Pregnant Then Screwed is a movement of hundreds of thousands, fighting for a world where becoming a parent doesn’t mean getting screwed. 10 years of impact. 10 years of change. 10 years of refusing to shut up. ❤️🩹1 million+ people supported through our advice line, online clinics, resources, referrals to legal advice, and mentoring. 📃Policy changes won – incl. extended redundancy protection, flexible working from day one, childcare funding. 🍼 £5 billion in childcare investment after years of campaigning (you’re welcome, Chancellor). 📺Thousands of media features and many many many parliamentary mentions– from Parliament to the front pages, we made sure our voices were heard. 🎃15,000+ marching parents demanding change at #MarchOfTheMummies (our biggest protest yet). 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Launching PTS Scotland with a dedicated team to ensure the voices in Scotland on these issues are heard too. And none of this would have been possible without the people behind the movement: 🫶🏾PTS’s incredible team – growing from just one person to a powerhouse charity. 🙌🏼An army of volunteers – from 35 in the early years to hundreds offering information, advice, support and referring onwards to others doing incredible work. 💻 An online community of over 400,000 sharing their stories, supporting each other, and fighting for change. 📣Supporters who refuse to stay silent, amplifying the message and holding policymakers to account. 💰Our funders and donors– your generosity has powered this work. • Forget 20% off coffee, a token logo or croissants in reception. Do you know what women want this IWD? Not to have their careers fed into a shredder. 🤦🏽♀️ This International Women’s Day, let’s #AccelerateAction and stop the Career Shredder! Here’s how: 1 - Ensure flexibility is built into every role and list the types of flexibility working that are available in the job advert.📃 2 - Improve paternity leave policy and encourage employees to take it.👏 3 - Collect and analyse maternity retention data.📊 If you’re an employee, ask if your company can commit to any of these, or start taking steps towards them. If you’re an employer drop PTS a line for help delivering these things within your organisation. 📥 Until then, please support us by shredding your own CV at careershredder.com - the bigger the pile, the louder the message. 👏🏻💪🏾 #careershredder #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction #stopthecareershredder #stopthewaste #pregnantthenscrewed

Today is a HUGE day🔥🔥🔥 because today we launch The Career Shredder, a giant shredder shredding thousands of CVs to expose the number of women whose careers are destroyed every year due to pregnancy and maternity discrimination. New research from Pregnant Then Screwed, together with Women In Data, reveals that up to 74,000 women in the UK every year now lose their job for getting pregnant or taking maternity leave - an increase of 37% (up from 54,000 in 2016)🤯. This comes at a huge cost to the UK in lost GDP. With only 2% of women able to pursue a claim in an employment tribunal, it's a costly justice that goes unseen. Until now. We're asking everyone to show their support by shredding their own CV at www.careershredder.com (you don't have to have a CV to hand, just a Linkedin log in). Anyone can support this campaign - we'd love partners, friends, colleagues and employers to all get involved too. Together we can stop this massive waste. #PregnantThenScrewed #CareerShredder #StopTheCareerShredder

    View profile for Kate Nightingale

Director of Communications, Campaigns and Research at Young Women’s Trust

Oh to be young! To have the whole world at your feet! Right? Wrong. Especially if you're female or non-binary, racially minoritised or disabled. Our latest survey shows the world of work is getting WORSE for young women: https://lnkd.in/exAWTd9p Discrimination is at its highest level for 3 years - over half of young women now experience this. Job insecurity is a growing blight on young women's lives: 38% worry about job security and they're more likely to be on a zero hours contract than men. Young women are paid less than young men (and a quarter have even been paid less for the same work - yes this is illegal). Young women are feeling stuck. One of the saddest stats in a miserable treasure-trove of sad stats for me was that a third of young women's hopes for the future have got worse over the last year. Some glimmers of hope are there in the Employment Rights Bill which, if it fulfils its promise, should give 1000s more young women job security, improved rights and better enforcement of those rights. It's sorely needed. And in the evidence of the impact of Young Women's Trust - with the data showing young women who've been involved with us have higher levels of confidence, optimism and happiness at work. Do have a read of the report, which my amazing team Dr Ashley Austin Fatima M. Hayley Richardson-Roberts Zoë Howe Yasmin Elkilany Nadina Kulara-Powell Rebecca Sibson Hayley Dean have worked so hard to compile and, I think, beautifully present. With a massive shout out to the ever-incredible Charly Paige at Studio Nowhere whose design really brings the data to life. We want to get this data out there far and wide so young women's voices are heard in decision-making, so we're well up for coming to talk about it if anyone would like to hear more!
