👩🏽🔬💖✨ I have always felt incredibly fortunate to have started my career as a scientific researcher - truly one of the most creative and exciting roles available on the planet! But like so many others, I didn't know anyone in that line of work growing up. So it is a personal and professional delight to announce that the Royal Academy of Engineering is partnering with Google DeepMind and The Hg Foundation to launch Google DeepMind Research Ready, a $1 million initiative to widen participation in AI research and careers. 🌟 🏫 Starting in summer 2025, this new programme will support up to 120 UK undergraduates from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds to embark on AI research placements at top UK universities. ➡ Applications are currently open for eligible UK universities to apply to host a research placement. ➡ Applications for students will follow in early 2025, with applications to be submitted directly to successful host universities. 🤝 Through this innovative partnership, we hope to build a stronger, more diverse AI research community that will ultimately help create solutions and services that benefit everyone. 📢 Launch of the Independent report - Advanced Materials North Earlier this month we had the pleasure of bringing stakeholders from across the Advanced Materials Ecosystem together to workshop and share their insights on the recommendations from the independent report - Advanced Materials North. Discussion points included potential objectives, priorities and next steps for ecosystem developments, that can support greater connectivity and facilitate research, innovation and commercialisation. Commissioned to understand opportunity around supporting ecosystem development for Advanced Materials in the North, the report created by Metro Dynamics and shaped through stakeholder workshops and surveys (thank you to everyone who engaged with these), which lays out key recommendations to support ecosystem building in the North of England.
