  • What is bowel cancer and its causes? Bowel cancer, or colorectal cancer, is a significant health concern with around 37,000 new cases annually in the UK. It typically affects the colon, rectum and rectosigmoid (in the pelvis, by the back passage). While both men and women can develop colon cancer at similar rates, rectal cancer is more common in men. Factors such as a diet high in red meat and low in fruits and vegetables, along with genetic predispositions like familial polyposis coli and Lynch syndrome, increase the risk. Most cancers develop from polyps which emphasises the importance of regular screening. • Watch Miles shares his experience of how Relimb, a specialist team at the Royal Free Hospital, helped with his bone-anchored implant revision surgery. https://lnkd.in/eDZBsqHd After a tragic accident in 2009, Miles sustained such severe damage to his right leg that he and his surgeons decided that it would be in his best interests to have an amputation of the leg above the knee. Since osseointegration surgery was not yet offered routinely in the UK at that time, his implant was inserted by surgeons in Australia in 2016. Fortunately, the Relimb service was started at the Royal Free Hospital in 2018. So, when Miles developed problems with his stoma (the point in the amputation stump through which the bone-anchored implant passes through the skin) he made his way to this hospital for help. Mr Norbert Kang, consultant and plastic surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital and one of the lead specialist consultants for osseointegration said, “Miles presented problems with his stoma breaking down at 6 years after his initial surgery. There was quite a bit of discharge and a little bit of pain. Having examined Miles, we offered him the possibility of revision surgery for his stoma, and that surgery was carried out successfully in 2022 creating a stable, pain-free and dry stoma." What this case has taught us is that surgery using osseointegrated bone-anchors is not something that can be carried out by just any group of surgeons. It should only be carried out by surgeons who are experts in the field with a complete understanding of what is needed to place a bone anchor successfully and what is needed to look after these patients if and when things go wrong after surgery. • Proactive Care: The importance of early breast screening Regular breast screening, using X-rays called mammograms, is crucial for spotting cancers too small to feel. Conducted by female health specialists known as mammographers, screening saves around 1,300 lives annually in the UK. Early detection increases treatment success, reduces the need for mastectomies, and boosts cure chances. Stay aware of how your breasts normally look and feel. Notice changes? • Advanced kidney surgery: Robot-assisted nephrectomy explained Robotic surgery significantly reduces the risks associated with traditional open surgery. With smaller incisions, less blood loss, and shorter hospital stays, this advanced technique offers a smoother recovery. Key benefits include: - Smaller scars - Fewer blood transfusions - Less post-op complications - Faster recovery time Unlike conventional surgery requiring up to five days in hospital and months of recovery, robotic-assisted procedures often mean just one or two days in hospital and a four to six-week recovery. Robotic surgery is advantageous for the following operations: - Partial nephrectomy – the surgeon excises a small tumour from the kidney and reconstructs the crater left in the kidney afterwards - Radical nephrectomy – the entire kidney is removed, usually for larger tumours or part of the kidney Partial nephrectomies are more complex than radical nephrectomies, with risks including bleeding and urinary leakage from the remaining kidney. Therefore, it's crucial to undergo this surgery at a hospital with extensive experience. Learn more about robotic surgery: https://lnkd.in/eDmctGq5 #KidneyHealth #RoboticSurgery #PrivateHospitalLondon
