  • The UK Government has announced the biggest welfare reforms in a generation, investing £1bn to get more people into work. However, the biggest barrier to employment for many is the lack of sustainable housing options. This was a golden opportunity for the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to unfreeze Local Housing Allowance. By failing to do so, some renters will be as much as £700 per year worse off, according to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Propertymark has consistently called for LHA to be unfrozen and annually increased to reflect market rents, you can read more in our position paper: https://lnkd.in/gSnTxHev Changes outlined today include: ✅Scrapping Work Capability Assessments – Simplifying support for those with health conditions. ✅A ‘Right to Try’ work guarantee – Letting people explore work without losing benefits. ✅Ending reassessments for lifelong conditions – Ensuring stability for those who cannot work. ✅Changes to Universal Credit and PIP – Adjusting payments to balance support and encourage employment.

A really productive session with other industry representatives at UK House of Lords today. Our Head of Policy and Campaigns Timothy Douglas met to discuss the amendments we need to see to the Renters' Rights Bill which include the below. We continue to push for change on: 👉 Review of fixed term tenancy plans and a plan of how to support the student sector which relies on them 👉 Concerns around the capacity of the court system to cope with the increase of cases - At the moment, a third of all possession cases are Section 21 notices, which are ‘accelerated’ claims that bypass the court system. The Renters’ (Reform) Bill plans to remove Section 21 and extend the grounds for possession under Section 8 instead – which will mean many more cases have to go through the courts. 👉 Pursuing realistic implentation dates for when the Bill will be enacted.
